The New Reality of Lounge Access
For years, complimentary airport lounge access was a standout feature on many Indian credit cards, turning a chaotic airport experience into a moment of calm with free food and comfortable seating. Once a perk for premium travellers, it became widely
available even on entry-level cards. However, the landscape has shifted. Due to rising operational costs and overcrowding, banks and card networks like Visa, Mastercard, and RuPay are now tying this 'free' benefit to spending conditions. This move is designed to ensure the perk is reserved for customers who are actively and regularly using their cards for purchases, not just for lounge entry. If your card has been mostly inactive aside from airport visits, you may find your access restricted.
Understanding the Quarterly Spend Rule
The most common new requirement is meeting a minimum spending threshold within a calendar quarter to unlock lounge access for the next quarter. For example, your spending between January and March will determine your eligibility for lounge access from April to June. These thresholds vary significantly across different banks and card types. Some entry-level cards may require a spend of ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 per quarter, while more premium cards might have higher targets. For instance, ICICI Bank has implemented a minimum spend of ₹35,000 in the preceding quarter for many of its cards. Similarly, some AU Small Finance Bank cards now require a quarterly spend of ₹50,000. It's crucial to check the specific terms of your card, as these rules are not uniform.
Which Cards and Networks Are Affected?
This trend is widespread, affecting cards across major issuers like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and SBI Card. For example, HDFC Bank has revised rules for popular series like Regalia and Tata Neu cards, linking lounge access to spending milestones. Similarly, some Axis Bank cards have removed the complimentary domestic lounge perk altogether. The changes are not just from banks; card networks are also involved. From April 2026, complimentary lounge access was discontinued for RuPay Platinum debit cards. RuPay Select cards may still offer the benefit, but it is now conditional on meeting spending criteria defined by the issuing bank. This makes it essential for cardholders to review communications from their bank to understand if and how their benefits have changed.
Strategies to Meet Your Spend Target
If retaining complimentary lounge access is important to you, a strategic approach to your spending can help you meet the new requirements. First, consolidate your payments. Instead of spreading your expenses across multiple cards or payment methods, focus your spending on the card that offers your desired lounge benefits. Use it for all your regular monthly expenses, including groceries, utility bills, and online shopping. Second, plan for large purchases. If you know you have a significant expense coming up, such as buying electronics or booking a holiday, use the designated credit card to help you reach the quarterly threshold quickly. Finally, many banks now require you to generate a voucher through their app after meeting the criteria, so make sure you are familiar with your bank's specific process.
What If You Can't Meet the Target?
If you are a light spender and find the quarterly targets difficult to achieve, there are still ways to enjoy airport lounges. Some premium and super-premium cards continue to offer complimentary lounge access without spending conditions, though they typically come with higher annual fees. Cards like the HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal or PNB Luxura Premium Metal offer unlimited access, albeit at a premium price point. Alternatively, you can explore paid lounge membership programs like Priority Pass or DreamFolks, which are sometimes offered as a benefit on higher-end cards. Lastly, you always have the option to pay for single-visit access directly at the lounge, which can be a cost-effective solution for infrequent travellers.
