The long wait and anxiety are over. The NBEMS has officially announced that the NEET-PG 2026 exam will be conducted on August 30, 2026. This confirmation puts an end to the rampant rumors and allows aspirants to focus their energy on a concrete timeline.
The exam will be conducted as a computer-based test in a single shift across the country. This single-shift approach is a significant move to ensure that all candidates face a uniform difficulty level, promoting a fairer assessment process. Key Changes to the Exam Pattern
Beyond just the date, the official notification has detailed some important changes to the exam itself. One of the most significant updates is the structure of the question paper. For 2026, the total number of multiple-choice questions has been reduced from 200 to 180. However, the total exam duration remains unchanged at 210 minutes (3 hours and 30 minutes). This change effectively gives candidates more time to consider each question, a move intended to support deeper reasoning and reduce time-based pressure. With this adjustment, the maximum possible score has also been revised from 800 to 720 marks. A New Approach to Exam Centre Allotment
In a major departure from previous years, the 'first-come, first-served' system for exam city allocation has been eliminated. This system often led to stress, with candidates rushing to apply just to secure a nearby centre. For NEET-PG 2026, aspirants will select three preferred states during registration. The system is designed to allocate centres closer to a candidate's home, with the correspondence address playing a key role in the first preference. Furthermore, the exam city intimation slip will be released much earlier, approximately three weeks before the exam date, giving students ample time to make necessary travel and accommodation arrangements. With the exam date set, the registration window has also been defined. According to official notifications, the application process began in early July 2026. An edit window is available for candidates to make corrections to their applications, typically closing in early August. One crucial date to remember is the internship completion cutoff, which has been set for September 30, 2026, allowing more graduates to be eligible. Aspirants must ensure they meet all eligibility criteria, including holding an MBBS degree and a valid registration certificate from the Medical Council of India or a State Medical Council. Enhanced Security and What It Means for You
To bolster the integrity of the examination, several new security measures have been introduced. Aadhaar-based authentication is now a mandatory part of both the application process and verification on the day of the exam.
