A New Era for Indian Space
For decades, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was the sole custodian of India's space aspirations. Today, the landscape is transforming at lightning speed. Following landmark policy reforms in 2020 designed to open the sector, a constellation
of ambitious startups has emerged. These companies are not just supporting ISRO; they are developing independent capabilities, building everything from launch vehicles to sophisticated satellite networks. This public-private synergy is creating a powerful engine for innovation, aiming to significantly expand India's share of the global space economy and free up ISRO to focus on pioneering deep-space exploration and human spaceflight missions like Gaganyaan.
Skyroot Aerospace: Launching Private Ambitions
Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has firmly established itself as a leader in India's private launch sector. Founded by former ISRO scientists, the company made history with the launch of Vikram-S, India's first privately developed rocket, in a suborbital flight in 2022. Building on that success, Skyroot achieved an even greater milestone in July 2026 by successfully launching its Vikram-1 rocket into orbit, making India only the third country with a private company capable of orbital launches. With its Vikram series of rockets, Skyroot aims to provide affordable and reliable launch services for the booming small satellite market, a critical capability for deploying future communication and observation constellations. The company's success was enabled by crucial support from ISRO, which provided access to its testing facilities and technical expertise.
Agnikul Cosmos: 3D-Printed Rockets on Demand
Agnikul Cosmos, incubated at IIT Madras, is taking a unique approach to launch vehicle manufacturing. The company is pioneering the use of 3D printing to create rocket engines in a single piece, dramatically reducing manufacturing time and complexity. Its flagship product, the Agnibaan launch vehicle, is designed to be highly customizable for small satellite missions up to 100 kg. A key innovation is the world's first single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine, which the company has successfully test-fired. Agnikul was the first private company to sign an agreement with ISRO for facility access and has even established its own private launchpad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, showcasing the deepening collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Pixxel: A Hyperspectral Eye on Earth
While some startups focus on getting to space, Pixxel is focused on what we can see from there. The Bengaluru-based company is building a constellation of the world's most advanced hyperspectral imaging satellites. Unlike standard cameras, these satellites capture light in hundreds of specific wavelengths, providing incredibly detailed data about the health of our planet. This technology has revolutionary applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, pollution detection, and resource management. Having already launched several satellites, including 'Shakuntala' and 'Anand', Pixxel has secured a grant to provide its technology to the Indian Air Force and is part of a consortium chosen to build and operate a national Earth observation constellation.
The Component Champions: Dhruva Space and Bellatrix
Beyond complete rockets and satellites, a crucial part of the ecosystem involves startups building the vital components that make space missions possible. Dhruva Space, based in Hyderabad, offers a 'full-stack' solution, providing everything from modular satellite platforms and solar arrays to satellite deployers that have been used on ISRO's PSLV missions. The company is also set to build satellites for India's strategic Space-Based Surveillance program. Meanwhile, Bengaluru's Bellatrix Aerospace specializes in propulsion systems. It is developing a range of thrusters, from eco-friendly 'green' propulsion systems to advanced Hall-effect thrusters that power satellites in orbit, helping them maintain their position and avoid collisions. Bellatrix has also partnered with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to develop satellites for Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) operations.
