E-commerce and Retail Lead the Pack
The E-commerce and Retail sectors are currently at the forefront of fresher recruitment. A recent TeamLease EdTech report highlights these sectors as having the highest hiring intent, with 93% of employers looking to bring on new graduates. This surge
is driven by expanding consumer markets, the growth of quick commerce, and the need for a larger workforce in logistics and customer experience. Freshers can find opportunities in roles like inventory and dispatch executive, programmatic advertising associate, supply chain analyst, and customer support. The demand is not just in major metros; hiring is expanding into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities as well.
Manufacturing's Quiet Resurgence
Often overlooked in favour of tech, the Manufacturing sector is a powerhouse for fresher hiring in 2026, with an impressive 89% of employers planning to recruit. Government initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and a focus on industrial growth have significantly boosted the absorption of entry-level talent. In-demand roles for freshers include battery assembly technicians, junior semiconductor design engineers, and positions in quality assurance, reflecting the sector's move towards more specialized and technology-driven production. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) is also an emerging in-demand certification for this sector.
IT and Tech Startups: A Shift in Focus
While the Information Technology sector remains the single largest employer of fresh engineering graduates by volume, the hiring strategy has become more selective. The overall fresher hiring intent in IT saw a slight dip from 81% to 76% in the second half of 2026. Companies are no longer focused on bulk hiring for generic roles. Instead, they are seeking freshers with specific, in-demand skills. The emphasis is now on expertise in areas like Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Roles such as AI application developer and data centre operations associate are among the most sought-after.
BFSI: Banking on New Talent
The Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector continues to be a major recruiter of fresh graduates, particularly for those with commerce and MBA backgrounds. While some reports show a dip in hiring in the broader banking segment, the insurance sub-sector has shown remarkable growth, with a significant year-on-year increase in hiring. Fresher hiring in insurance surged by 43% year-over-year in one recent period, indicating aggressive capacity-building. Popular entry-level roles include relationship manager, loan officer, and financial analyst, driven by the need for a strong customer-facing workforce.
Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals: A Growing Field
Driven by an increased focus on public health, greater insurance coverage, and the rise of HealthTech platforms, the Healthcare and Pharma sectors are steadily hiring fresh talent. The industry is creating new roles at the intersection of medicine and technology, with a need for professionals who can manage clinical data and work with AI-powered diagnostic tools. Key opportunities for freshers include positions like biomedical technician, pharma sales executive, clinical data manager, and health analytics professional.
The Skills That Get You Hired
Across all sectors, employers are showing a clear preference for skills over just academic scores. Practical, job-ready abilities are what make a candidate stand out. Technical skills in high demand include AI and machine learning, cloud computing (AWS, Azure), cybersecurity, and data analytics (Python, SQL, Power BI). However, it's not just about tech. Employers are also looking for strong communication, applied problem-solving, and hands-on project experience. Certifications in niche areas like VLSI chip design or digital marketing analytics are also gaining traction.
