A Window Seat to the Eastern Ghats
The true star of the journey is the Vistadome coach itself, an engineering marvel designed for sightseeing. Unlike conventional train cars, it features oversized glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and seats that can rotate 180 degrees. This design provides
an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the dramatic landscape, transforming a simple train ride into an immersive cinematic experience. With a limited seating capacity of around 44 passengers, the air-conditioned coach offers a comfortable and exclusive atmosphere, complete with an observation lounge for soaking in the rear views as the train snakes through the hills.
The Magic of a Monsoon Journey
While Araku is a year-round destination, the monsoon season from July to September brings out its most vibrant character. The journey through the Eastern Ghats becomes a visual feast of nature at its wildest. The hills are draped in countless shades of green, and previously dormant waterfalls spring to life, cascading down rock faces in full view of the train. The mist and low-hanging clouds add a layer of mystique as the train navigates its path through over 50 tunnels and across 84 bridges. Emerging from a dark tunnel into a valley shrouded in fog or a landscape glistening with fresh rain is a spectacle that makes the monsoon trip particularly special.
Highlights Along the Route
The four-hour journey from Visakhapatnam to Araku is punctuated by breathtaking sights. The train ascends from sea level to an altitude of over 900 metres, offering a constantly changing panorama. Key highlights include the dramatic climb through the Anantagiri hills, the deep valleys, and sprawling coffee plantations that blanket the slopes. The route also passes near the famous Borra Caves, giving you a glimpse of the region's unique geological formations. The frequent tunnels create a thrilling rhythm of light and dark, while the high bridges offer heart-stopping views of the gorges below, making every moment of the trip photo-worthy.
Planning Your Vistadome Trip
To experience this journey, you need to book a seat in the Vistadome coach (class code: EV) attached to the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger train. The train typically departs from Visakhapatnam early in the morning, around 7 AM, reaching Araku by 11 AM. Tickets can be booked online through the IRCTC website or app. Given the popularity and limited seats, it is highly advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially for weekend or holiday travel. For the best views on the way to Araku, try to secure a seat on the right side of the coach. Many travellers opt for a 'rail-cum-road' package, taking the scenic train journey up to Araku and returning by road to experience the ghats from a different perspective.
Exploring Araku Valley
Upon arrival, the charm of Araku Valley unfolds. The cool climate, a welcome respite from the coastal humidity, invites exploration. You can delve into the local culture at the Tribal Museum, wander through the beautifully maintained Padmapuram Gardens, or learn about the region's famous brew at the Coffee Museum. For the more adventurous, there are trekking trails that lead to hidden spots. Don't leave without trying the local delicacy, bamboo chicken, or purchasing some of the aromatic, locally grown coffee for which the valley is renowned. A day or two in Araku is enough to soak in its serene atmosphere before heading back.
