Why Prices Surge During Festivals
It’s a simple case of supply and demand. Festivals like Diwali, Dussehra, and Christmas see a massive spike in people travelling from metro cities to their hometowns. Airlines use a system called dynamic pricing, where algorithms automatically increase
fares as demand rises and seats get booked. This is why waiting until the last minute can lead to budget shocks, with prices sometimes jumping by over 150% in the final weeks. The surge isn't just a minor bump; routes to cities in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, for example, can see fares almost triple compared to non-festive periods.
The Golden Booking Window
The single most effective strategy to save money is to book early. For domestic travel within India during the festive season, the sweet spot is to book your tickets around 60 to 90 days in advance. This period, roughly two to three months before your travel date, is when airlines have released their inventory but demand pressure hasn't yet peaked. For example, for Diwali 2026, which falls in late October, the ideal time to book would be between late July and early August. Booking within 30 days of the festival often means you could pay 50% to 100% more for the same ticket.
Flexibility is Your Best Friend
If you have some wiggle room in your schedule, you can unlock significant savings. Airfares are often highest on the Friday and Saturday immediately preceding a major festival. By shifting your departure to a day or two earlier, or even flying on the day of the festival itself, you could see savings of 20% to 40%. Most travellers want to arrive before the main celebrations begin, leaving flights on the festival day relatively empty and therefore cheaper. Similarly, returning a few days after the post-festival rush can also cut down your return fare.
Use Technology to Track Fares
You don’t have to manually check flight prices every day. Use online travel aggregators and flight comparison websites to get a broad view of all available options. More importantly, use their price alert features. By setting an alert for your desired route and dates, you will receive an email or notification the moment the price drops, allowing you to book when the fare is at its lowest. These tools take the guesswork out of timing your purchase and ensure you don't miss out on a good deal.
Consider Alternative Airports
Major metropolitan airports are always the busiest and often the most expensive to fly into. If your final destination is serviceable by a smaller, secondary airport, it’s worth checking the fares for that route. While it may add some time to your ground travel, the savings on your flight ticket can sometimes be substantial. This is especially true for travellers heading to cities that are located between two airports. A little extra research into nearby airports can lead to unexpected savings that make the slightly longer journey worthwhile.
