Sourav Ganguly: The Prince Arrives at Lord’s
When Sourav Ganguly walked out to bat on his Test debut at Lord's in 1996, he was a man with a point to prove. Having made his ODI debut four years earlier and been subsequently dropped, questions lingered about his place in the side. He answered them
emphatically. Displaying the elegant off-side strokeplay that would become his trademark, Ganguly crafted a magnificent 131. He became only the third batsman in history to score a century on debut at the hallowed ground. His innings, which lasted over seven hours, wasn't just about the runs; it was a statement of class and composure that silenced all doubters and kick-started a legendary career for the man who would become one of India's most successful captains.
Shikhar Dhawan: The Fastest of Them All
Few debuts have been as destructive as Shikhar Dhawan's in 2013. Playing against Australia in Mohali, the left-handed opener didn't just score a century; he redefined what was possible. Dhawan reached his hundred in a jaw-dropping 85 balls, the fastest ever by a Test debutant. He tore into the Australian attack with a stunning array of shots, hitting 21 boundaries in his whirlwind knock. By the time he was dismissed for 187 off just 174 balls, he had not only put India in a commanding position but had also set a record for the highest score by an Indian on Test debut. It was an innings of pure, unadulterated aggression that left the cricketing world in awe.
Ravichandran Ashwin: A Spinner's Dream Debut
Ravichandran Ashwin announced himself as a major force in Test cricket from his very first match against the West Indies in 2011. The crafty off-spinner, already a known talent in shorter formats, demonstrated his mastery in the longest version of the game immediately. Ashwin became the seventh Indian bowler to take a five-wicket haul on debut, finishing with figures of 6/47 in the second innings. He took nine wickets in the match, guiding India to a comfortable victory and earning the Player of the Match award. This performance was a sign of things to come, as Ashwin would go on to become India’s premier spinner and one of the fastest bowlers in history to reach numerous wicket milestones.
Mustafizur Rahman: The Fizz Shocks India
In 2015, a young, unassuming left-arm pacer from Bangladesh named Mustafizur Rahman turned an ODI series against a powerhouse Indian batting lineup on its head. In his very first match, he bamboozled the opposition with his clever cutters and changes of pace, taking a five-wicket haul (5/50). This performance was instrumental in Bangladesh securing a historic win. As if that wasn't enough, he followed it up in his second match with an even more remarkable 6/43. He became the first player in ODI history to take 11 wickets in his first two matches, single-handedly bowling his team to an unforgettable series victory and instantly becoming a national hero.
Narendra Hirwani: A Record for the Ages
The story of leg-spinner Narendra Hirwani’s Test debut in 1988 is the stuff of legend. Against a formidable West Indies side, the 19-year-old produced a bowling performance that remains a world record to this day. In the first innings, he mesmerized the batsmen to take 8 wickets for 61 runs. He then repeated the feat in the second innings, claiming another 8 wickets for 75 runs. His total match figures of 16 wickets for 136 runs are the best ever by a bowler on Test debut. It was a miraculous performance that led India to a series-levelling victory and wrote Hirwani's name into the history books forever.
