Which Trains Are Affected?
The schedule change impacts two key services originating from Varanasi Cantt. station. The first is the Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20888), and the second is the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22500). Both trains
will now depart 10 minutes earlier than their previous schedules. This revision by the Northern Railway is intended to streamline operations, but it requires passengers to adjust their travel plans to avoid any inconvenience. It is important to note that the very first Vande Bharat Express, which runs between New Delhi and Varanasi, is not affected by this specific timetable update.
The New Timetable in Detail
To ensure a smooth journey, passengers must be aware of the precise changes. The Varanasi-Ranchi Vande Bharat Express (20888), which previously left Varanasi at 4:05 PM, will now depart at 3:55 PM. Similarly, the Varanasi-Deoghar Vande Bharat Express (22500), which had a scheduled departure of 6:20 AM, will now leave at 6:10 AM. Indian Railways has confirmed that while the departure from Varanasi is earlier, the timings at all subsequent stations along both routes will remain unchanged. This means the change only affects passengers starting their journey from Varanasi.
Reason for the Revision
According to railway officials, the adjustment has been made for operational reasons. In a complex and crowded network like Indian Railways, even minor changes can help improve overall punctuality and slot management. An earlier departure from the originating station allows the train to more seamlessly integrate into its designated path on the main line, reducing the chances of delays en route. While a 10-minute change might seem minor, it is a crucial adjustment for maintaining the high-speed, time-sensitive schedule that the Vande Bharat service is known for.
About the Affected Services
The Varanasi-Ranchi service (20888/20887) is a vital link connecting Uttar Pradesh with Jharkhand. Launched in March 2024, it covers a distance of 536 kilometres in about 7 hours and 50 minutes, running six days a week (except Tuesdays). The train stops at important stations like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Gaya, Koderma, and Bokaro Steel City. The Varanasi-Deoghar service (22500) is also critical, especially for pilgrims visiting the revered Baba Baidyanath Jyotirlinga temple in Deoghar. This train provides a fast and convenient option for travellers on this important spiritual route.
What Passengers Should Do
Indian Railways advises all passengers booked on these two services from September 2 onwards to double-check their train timings before heading to the station. Although tickets booked previously may show the old time, the new schedule is now in effect. Relying on memory or old ticket information could lead to missing the train entirely. It is recommended to arrive at Varanasi Cantt. station at least 20-30 minutes before the new, earlier departure time to allow for security checks and locating your platform without a last-minute rush. The most reliable sources for verifying timings are the official National Train Enquiry System (NTES) website and app.
