Jaipur, India's iconic Pink City, is buzzing with a renewed sense of purpose. As this historic capital prepares to celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2027, it finds itself firmly in the international travel spotlight.
A Royal City Reawakens
Founded on November 18, 1727, by the
visionary Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur stands as one of India's first planned cities. Its founder, a ruler with a keen interest in science and astronomy, collaborated with scholar Vidyadhar Bhattacharya to design a city based on ancient principles of Vastu Shastra. The result was a marvel of urban planning, with wide streets, a grid-like structure, and fortified walls. This architectural and cultural significance was officially recognised in 2019 when the Walled City of Jaipur was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, as the city approaches its tercentenary, it is leveraging this rich heritage to position itself on the global stage, attracting a new wave of curious travellers.
Preparing for a 300-Year Milestone
The run-up to 2027 is not just a countdown; it's a city-wide effort of restoration and celebration. The Rajasthan government and local bodies have initiated several projects to enhance Jaipur's grandeur for its 300th year. Key among these is the restoration of the Parkota, the city's heritage wall, which has faced neglect in recent years. Officials are focused on resolving issues like cleanliness and traffic to restore its former glory. Local merchant associations are also playing a vital role, launching a year-long campaign to promote heritage conservation, cleanliness, and a uniform pink colour scheme to reinforce the city's famous identity. These preparations will kick off with a series of events, including the international BRICS Melody musical collaboration in late 2026, marking the official start of the year-long anniversary celebrations.
The Global Spotlight Shines Bright
The world is taking notice. In recent years, Jaipur has consistently earned high praise from international travel authorities. The city has featured prominently in the Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards, securing the 16th spot globally in 2026 and an impressive 5th position in 2025, even outranking Florence. This recognition is not just for its historical monuments, but for the complete experience it offers: world-class hospitality, vibrant markets, and a rich culinary scene. Luxury hotels like Raffles Jaipur are also gaining international acclaim, recently being recognised in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2026. These accolades confirm a shift in global travel, where tourists increasingly seek authentic, culturally immersive journeys, something the Pink City offers in abundance.
Beyond the Palaces: A Modern Renaissance
While Jaipur's identity is rooted in its magnificent forts and palaces like Hawa Mahal and Amer Fort, a contemporary energy is reshaping the city experience. The hospitality landscape is evolving beyond traditional palace hotels, with new boutique havelis and internationally inspired luxury resorts. Properties like the new Ananta Spa & Resort, a large_scale Japanese_inspired development, and the soon_to_open Signia by Hilton Jaipur signal a new chapter in the city's tourism story. This blend of ancient charm and modern luxury is a key part of its growing appeal. The city now offers everything from rooftop cafes with views of ancient forts to curated cultural experiences like artisan masterclasses and private concerts, ensuring that there is something for every type of traveller.
