The Double Threat to Your Skin
Delhi's hazy season is a two-pronged assault on your skin. First, there's the dramatic spike in air pollution, particularly PM2.5—fine particulate matter about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These tiny particles don't just sit on your skin; they
are small enough to penetrate pores and hair follicles, creating damage from within. Second, the accompanying drop in temperature and humidity strips the air of moisture. This cold, dry air leaches moisture directly from your skin, weakening its natural protective barrier. This combination of pollution penetrating the skin and weather compromising its defences creates a perfect storm for discomfort, premature ageing, and a host of other issues.
How Pollution Harms the Skin Barrier
Your skin has a natural barrier, known as the stratum corneum, made of lipids and skin cells. Its job is to keep moisture in and irritants out. Pollutants like PM2.5 wage a direct attack on this barrier. When these particles make contact with your skin, they generate free radicals—unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress. This process breaks down essential proteins like collagen, which keeps skin firm, and depletes natural antioxidants like vitamins C and E. Studies show that PM2.5 exposure can inhibit the production of filaggrin, a protein crucial for skin barrier function. This damage makes the barrier more porous, leading to increased water loss, dehydration, and inflammation, and can worsen conditions like acne, eczema, and pigmentation.
Step 1: A Deeper, Smarter Cleanse
During the hazy season, a single face wash at the end of the day isn't enough. Pollutants, makeup, and natural oils build up, forming a film that can clog pores and cause breakouts. Experts recommend 'double cleansing' in your evening routine. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve and lift particulate matter, sunscreen, and oil-based impurities. Follow up with a gentle, hydrating, water-based cleanser to wash everything away without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Harsh, stripping cleansers can further weaken your already compromised skin barrier, so choose mild, non-foaming formulas.
Step 2: Rebuild with Antioxidants and Hydration
After cleansing, the next step is to replenish your skin's defences. This is where serums come in. Look for serums containing powerful antioxidants like Vitamin C and Vitamin E. These ingredients work to neutralize the free radicals generated by pollution, helping to prevent collagen breakdown and reduce inflammation. Follow your antioxidant serum with a robust moisturizer. In Delhi's dry winters, a lightweight lotion may not be enough. Opt for a thicker cream with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. These ingredients, known as humectants and emollients, help to draw moisture into the skin and seal it in, effectively repairing and reinforcing your skin's natural barrier.
Step 3: Defend with a Daily Shield
The final and most critical step in your morning routine is protection. Many people think sunscreen is only for sunny days, but UV rays are present even on cloudy, hazy days and contribute to skin damage and pigmentation. More importantly, sunscreen creates a physical barrier on your skin that can help shield it from some environmental pollutants. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher should be a non-negotiable final step every single morning. It protects against UV radiation and acts as a final layer of defence against the daily onslaught of urban grime, keeping your skin healthier in the long run.
