The Biggest Hack: Know if You Actually Need It
The most important 'hack' is knowing the exemption rule. If you are an Indian tourist transiting through a Malaysian airport and you do not pass through immigration, you are exempt from filling out the MDAC. This applies to passengers who stay within
the international transit area of the airport for their connecting flight. If your luggage is checked through to your final destination and you have your connecting boarding pass, you can typically proceed to your next gate without clearing immigration, meaning no MDAC is required.
The KLIA Terminal Transfer Trap
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has two main terminals, KLIA1 and KLIA2, which are not connected airside. This is a critical detail. If your travel involves switching between these two terminals—for instance, arriving at KLIA2 on a low-cost carrier and departing from KLIA1 on a full-service airline—you will be required to clear immigration to transfer. In this scenario, completing the MDAC is mandatory because you are officially entering Malaysia to get to the other terminal. The same rule applies if you need to collect your baggage and re-check it for your onward flight.
Timing is Everything: The 3-Day Rule
If you determine that you do need to complete the arrival card, timing your submission is crucial. The MDAC must be filled out online within the three days leading up to your arrival in Malaysia. For example, if you are scheduled to land in Kuala Lumpur on a Friday, you can submit the form on the preceding Wednesday or Thursday, but not before. Submitting it too early will result in an invalid registration. This is a simple but common mistake that can cause unnecessary delays upon arrival. The form is free and should only be completed on the official Malaysian Immigration Department website to avoid scam sites that charge a fee.
Be Prepared: Documents You'll Need
Even with visa-free entry for Indians (until December 31, 2026), you need to have your documents in order. To complete the MDAC, you'll require your passport details, flight information (arrival and departure dates), and the address of your accommodation in Malaysia. If you are only transiting and must fill out the card because you are exiting the airport (e.g., for a hotel during a long layover), use the hotel's address. If your transit is an emergency or you are unsure, some guidance suggests selecting “OTHERS” as the accommodation type and entering “Transit Only” as the address. Always have a digital or printed copy of your MDAC confirmation, return flight ticket, and hotel booking ready for immigration.
The 'When in Doubt' Rule
If you are uncertain about your transit situation—perhaps you have a long layover and might want to leave the airport, or your airline's advice is unclear—the safest strategy is to fill out the MDAC anyway. Since the form is free and takes only a few minutes to complete, submitting it provides a safety net. If you end up not needing to clear immigration, no harm is done. However, if your plans change or you misunderstood the transit process, having a completed MDAC will prevent you from being denied entry or facing significant delays at the immigration counter. It is a risk-free way to ensure all your bases are covered.
