Every time you cook, shower, or run a hot bath, you release warm, humid air into your home. A ventilation fan's job is to pull this moisture-laden air out before it causes problems. However, in many homes, especially older ones or those with uninspected
renovations, these fans sometimes vent directly into an attic, crawlspace, or the cavity between walls. This is a serious mistake. When warm, moist air is pumped into a cool, unconditioned space like an attic, the moisture condenses on cold surfaces like roof sheathing, rafters, and insulation. This creates a perfect breeding ground for mould and mildew, can cause wood to rot, and compromises the effectiveness of your insulation.
Telltale Signs of an Improperly Vented Fan
You don’t have to be a home inspector to spot the red flags of poor ventilation. The most common signs are often dismissed as minor annoyances, but they can point to a larger issue. Look for persistent condensation on mirrors and windows that doesn't clear within 15-20 minutes after a shower. Other clues include paint or wallpaper that is peeling or bubbling, dark spots of mould appearing on ceilings or in grout lines, and a persistent musty smell that cleaning can't eliminate. In the winter, you might notice frost or dampness on the underside of your roof decking in the attic. Water stains on the ceiling around the fan itself are another dead giveaway that condensation is forming in the ductwork and leaking back down.
How to Conduct a Vent Check
Finding out where your vents terminate is a straightforward process. The easiest method is a simple visual inspection. First, walk around the exterior of your house. Look for plastic or metal vent caps on the walls or roof. These are the proper exit points. Turn on your bathroom or kitchen fan and see if you can feel or see air being pushed out of one of them. If you can’t find an exterior vent that corresponds to your fan, the next step is to check the attic or crawlspace above the fan. Safely access the area and locate the fan's housing. You should see a flexible or rigid duct pipe connected to it. Follow this ducting. If it terminates properly, it will be securely connected to a vent that goes through the roof or an exterior wall. If it simply ends in the open attic or is aimed at a soffit vent, it is not installed correctly.
Kitchen vs. Bathroom Vents: Key Differences
While both kitchen and bathroom fans serve to remove moisture, kitchen range hoods have the added job of removing grease, smoke, and cooking odours. This makes proper outdoor venting even more critical. Recirculating (or ductless) range hoods, which pass air through a filter and release it back into the kitchen, are less effective than ducted systems that exhaust pollutants completely. Furthermore, the grease and lint exhausted from kitchen and laundry dryer vents can create a significant fire hazard if they accumulate inside an attic or wall space. Building codes are very clear: all mechanical exhaust, whether from a bathroom, kitchen, or dryer, must terminate outside the building.
