A long train journey holds a certain romance, but comfort is key. The secret to a truly relaxing trip often lies not in your large suitcase, but in the small bag you keep with you. Here’s how to pack it perfectly for a seamless experience.
Choose the Right Bag
Before you even
think about what to pack, consider the bag itself. For train travel in India, your luggage stays with you, often tucked under a seat. A soft-sided backpack with multiple compartments or a small, wheeled trolley case that fits within the size limits is ideal. Indian Railways specifies maximum dimensions for luggage kept in the compartment, which are particularly tight in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car coaches, so a compact bag is non-negotiable to avoid issues. A bag with easy-access pockets allows you to grab essentials like tickets, water, or a phone without having to unpack everything in a crowded coach.
The Immediate Access Kit
Certain items need to be within arm's reach from the moment you board. Keep your ticket and a government-issued ID (or a digital version like DigiLocker) in an easily accessible pouch. A reusable water bottle is a must for staying hydrated, and you can refill it at stations. Pack some light, non-messy snacks like nuts, dry fruits, or energy bars to manage hunger between meal times. Finally, keep your phone, charger, and a fully charged power bank handy, as charging points on trains can be crowded or unreliable.
Creating Your Comfort Cocoon
Long hours in the same seat demand a few creature comforts. Temperatures on a train can fluctuate, so pack a light shawl, jacket, or blanket to stay warm, especially during overnight travel or in air-conditioned coaches. A travel or neck pillow can make a huge difference in getting restful sleep, preventing stiffness whether you're in a seat or a berth. To block out the inevitable noise of a moving train and fellow passengers, a pair of earplugs or noise-cancelling headphones is invaluable. And for entertainment, a book, e-reader, or downloaded podcasts will help the hours fly by.
The Overnight Refresh Pack
If your journey extends overnight, a small hygiene kit is essential to feel fresh. Pack travel_sized versions of your toothbrush, toothpaste, and face wash. Wet wipes and hand sanitiser are indispensable for quick clean_ups when access to a washroom is inconvenient. A small microfibre towel, a comb, and lip balm complete the kit. Keeping these items in a separate, waterproof pouch makes them easy to grab for a quick trip to the washroom without rummaging through your main bag.
Prioritising Safety and Health
On a train, you are responsible for your own luggage security. It’s wise to carry a small lock and chain to secure your larger bags under the berth. Keep all your valuables—like your wallet, phone, and documents—in a small daypack or crossbody bag that you can keep on your person, even while sleeping. Also, pack a basic first–aid kit with essentials like plasters, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal prescription medications you need during the journey.
