The Cheapest Route: By Bus
The most economical way to reach Mandarmani is by bus. Numerous private and state-run buses ply daily from Kolkata's Esplanade bus terminus. You can find a mix of AC and non-AC options, with fares for non-AC buses starting as low as ₹200. The journey
takes approximately four to five hours, covering a distance of about 170-180 km. Buses drop you at Chaulkhola, the main stop for Mandarmani, from where you can hire an auto-rickshaw or a local van for the final stretch to your hotel, which usually costs around ₹150-₹200.
An Alternative: Train and Onward Journey
While there is no direct train to Mandarmani, you can take a train from Howrah Junction to the nearest railway stations, which are Kanthi (Contai) or Digha. Several trains run on this route daily, and the journey to Kanthi takes about two and a half hours. From Kanthi station, Mandarmani is about 17 km away, and you can easily find auto-rickshaws or shared vehicles to take you to the beach town. A reserved auto from Kanthi station might cost around ₹350-₹400, so this option can be cost-effective if you are traveling in a group.
Finding Budget-Friendly Accommodation
Mandarmani has a wide range of hotels and resorts catering to all budgets. For a low-cost trip, look for guesthouses or budget hotels located slightly away from the main beach road. Prices for basic, clean rooms can start from as low as ₹800-₹1200 per night, especially if you book in advance or travel during the off-season. Many hotels offer rooms for under ₹2000, providing essential amenities. Weekends and public holidays tend to be busier and more expensive, so planning a trip on a regular weekend can help keep costs down.
Eating Well on a Shoestring
One of the highlights of a trip to Mandarmani is the fresh seafood, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy it. The numerous beach shacks are your best bet for delicious and affordable meals. A simple meal of rice, dal, and a vegetable curry can cost around ₹100-₹150, while a fresh fish thali might range from ₹200-₹350, depending on the type of fish. You can feast on fried pomfret, prawn curry, and various other local catches. Eating at these local shacks instead of expensive resort restaurants is a key to keeping your food budget in check.
Free and Low-Cost Activities
The best thing about a beach destination is that the main attraction is completely free. Spend your days lounging on the sand, taking long walks along the 13-km-long beach, and watching the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. A must-see is the 'mohona' or river delta at the end of the beach, where you can spot thousands of red crabs scurrying on the sand, a sight that is particularly visible during low tide. For a little adventure, you can inquire about water sports like banana boat rides or jet skiing, but be prepared to bargain for a good price. Visiting nearby quiet beaches like Tajpur or Shankarpur can also be a great, low-cost excursion.
