The 'One Handbag' Rule Is Now Strictly Enforced
The most significant change for Indian flyers is the strict enforcement of the 'one handbag' rule by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). While the rule itself has existed for years, airlines and airport security are now universally applying
it across all domestic and international departures from India. For economy class passengers, this means you are permitted one primary piece of cabin baggage, which typically must not exceed 7 kg. Forgetting this can lead to being forced to check your extra bag at the gate, often incurring high fees.
What Counts as a 'Personal Item'?
In addition to your main cabin bag, most airlines allow one small personal item. However, the definition of this has become stricter. This item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. Accepted personal items generally include a ladies' handbag, a slim laptop bag, or a small backpack. A bulky backpack that you would normally place in the overhead bin will not qualify as a personal item and will be counted as your one piece of cabin luggage. Some sources suggest this personal item should not exceed 3 kg.
Cabin Bag Size and Weight Limits
For most domestic airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air, the standard cabin bag weight limit is 7 kg. Dimensions are also critical, commonly capped at 55cm x 35cm x 25cm. Air India has slightly different dimensions at 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, with an economy weight limit that can be 7kg or 8kg depending on the booking. Business and first-class passengers usually enjoy a higher allowance, typically around 10 kg to 12 kg. It is essential to remember that the weight of the bag itself contributes to this limit, so using lightweight luggage is a smart move.
Checked-In Baggage: What's New?
For domestic economy travel, the standard checked-in baggage allowance on most carriers remains 15 kg. However, several airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, now offer different fare families (often called Lite, Flexi, etc.) that affect your allowance. 'Lite' or 'Saver' fares may not include any free checked baggage at all, while 'Flexi' fares might offer a more generous 20 kg or 25 kg. For international flights, the allowance is typically higher, often starting at 23 kg or 25 kg for economy class on full-service carriers. Always check the specifics of your ticket, as pre-booking extra baggage online is significantly cheaper than paying excess fees at the airport.
Power Banks and Prohibited Items
The rules regarding certain electronic items have been solidified. Power banks and any spare lithium batteries are strictly prohibited in checked-in luggage and must be carried in your cabin bag. E-cigarettes and vapes are also banned from checked bags. When it comes to liquids, the 100ml rule remains in effect for cabin baggage. All liquids, aerosols, and gels must be in containers of 100ml or less, and all containers must fit into a single, transparent, resealable one-litre plastic bag. Items like knives, scissors with blades over a certain length, and tools are not permitted in the cabin.
Tips for a Smoother Airport Experience
To ensure your journey is hassle-free, a little preparation goes a long way. First, weigh your bags at home before you leave. Second, if you have a connecting flight, especially from an international to a domestic route, be aware that you will need to collect your bags, clear customs, and re-check them for the domestic leg. Finally, wear your heaviest items, like jackets or boots, instead of packing them. Given that airlines are now offering 'zero baggage' fares with discounts for passengers travelling with only cabin luggage, packing light can also save you money.
