Monsoon Set to Intensify
After a relatively subdued start to the season, the southwest monsoon is becoming more active over the state. An IMD press release dated June 28, 2026, points to a trough running from North Interior Karnataka to the Comorin area in the lower troposphere,
which is contributing to the increased moisture and rainfall. This atmospheric condition is expected to bring fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Coastal Karnataka through the first week of July. While the state has experienced a significant rain deficit so far this June, these developing systems are expected to bring much-needed, albeit intense, showers to the coastal belt.
Districts Under IMD Alerts
The IMD has issued specific alerts for the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. A Yellow Alert was issued for these districts for June 27-30, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The forecast indicates that the rainfall intensity is likely to increase further from June 30 onwards, with predictions of isolated very heavy rainfall in Coastal Karnataka on July 1 and 2. This has prompted authorities to remain vigilant and prepare for potential impacts. While some earlier reports mentioned an Orange Alert, the most recent advisories point towards a sustained period of heavy showers.
Warnings for Fishermen and Residents
A crucial part of the advisory is a stern warning for the fishing community. The sea is expected to be rough, with squally weather and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, likely along the Karnataka coast. Fishermen have been repeatedly advised not to venture into the sea until conditions improve. The advisory is particularly important as strong winds and high waves can develop suddenly, even when rainfall isn't at its peak. For the general public, especially those in low-lying areas, the advice is to be cautious of potential waterlogging and localized flooding. Authorities have also urged people to avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning and thunderstorms.

The anticipated heavy downpour could lead to several disruptions. Localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and closure of underpasses are expected, particularly in urban centres. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to safeguard life and property. This includes staying indoors and avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy spells, securely closing windows and doors, and unplugging electronic appliances during lightning activity. It is also wise to stay away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity. Travelers, especially those planning journeys through the ghat sections, should monitor weather updates closely, as heavy rain can increase the risk of landslides and reduce visibility.
