If you're planning an overnight train journey, you'll need to adjust your charging habits. Indian Railways is strictly enforcing a rule to switch off all charging points from 11 PM to 5 AM. Here’s what you need to know about this crucial safety rule.
The Official Directive
The Railway Board has issued a firm directive to all railway zones across the country: all mobile phone and laptop charging sockets in train coaches must be switched off between 11 PM and 5 AM. This isn't a new rule, but a strict enforcement of a policy that has been in place for years. In a letter dated October 26, 2026, the board emphasized that there will be no exceptions to this six-hour shutdown. To ensure compliance, railway authorities will be conducting surprise inspections during overnight journeys. Staff will be trained to ensure the power supply to these points is cut without fail, prioritizing passenger safety above all else.
Why The Renewed Focus on Safety?
The primary driver behind this renewed enforcement is fire safety. The directive was re-emphasized following a recent incident in the South Eastern Railway zone where a passenger's power bank exploded while charging during the restricted overnight hours, filling the coach with smoke. While no major injuries were reported, the event served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers. Overheating of electronic devices like phones, laptops, and especially power banks, is a significant fire risk, particularly when left unattended while passengers are asleep. This measure is designed to prevent such incidents by eliminating the risk at its source during the most vulnerable hours.
A Long-Standing Precautionary Measure
This safety rule is not a recent development. The Railway Board first introduced the measure back in June 2014. The decision was based on a recommendation from the Commissioner of Railway Safety following a serious fire incident in an AC coach of the Bengaluru-Hazur Sahib Nanded Express in 2013. The initial recommendation was for a shutdown from 10 PM to 6 AM, but the board adjusted it to the current 11 PM to 5 AM window to balance safety with passenger convenience. Over the years, the rule has been reiterated, notably in 2021 and again recently, to ensure it is not forgotten or ignored.
Which Trains And Coaches Are Affected?
The initial 2014 directive focused specifically on air-conditioned (AC) coaches. However, the latest communications urge all zonal railways to ensure strict compliance across train coaches, implying a broader application. Following a fire in a sleeper_class coach in November 2023, safety authorities recommended extending the charging restrictions to non_AC coaches as well. While deploying staff to manually manage this in every non_AC coach was previously considered a challenge, the renewed emphasis on safety suggests passengers in all classes should be prepared for the overnight shutdown. As a passenger, it is safest to assume the rule applies to your coach, whether it is AC or sleeper.
What This Means for Passengers
The practical takeaway for travellers is simple: plan ahead. Make sure your mobile phones, laptops, and other essential electronics are fully charged before the 11 PM cut_off. Carrying a fully charged power bank is a great backup, but remember that these devices themselves should not be charged on the train overnight. The rule only affects the charging sockets; you are still free to use your devices during the night. This is a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of ensuring a safe journey for everyone on board. By cooperating with this directive, passengers contribute to a safer travel environment and reduce the risk of preventable accidents.
