Monsoon Intensifies Across the State
After covering all 30 districts of Odisha by June 23, the southwest monsoon has become significantly more active. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that a strong monsoon current is now established, leading to conditions ripe for
widespread showers. This surge is expected to bring substantial rainfall until at least June 30, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several areas. This intensification provides a much-needed boost after some regions experienced a deficit in rainfall earlier in the month, though it also brings the risk of weather-related hazards.
Districts on High Alert
The IMD's regional centre in Bhubaneswar has issued specific warnings for numerous districts. An Orange Warning, indicating a need to be prepared for severe weather, has been issued for districts including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, and several others, where thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely. A Yellow Warning is in place for many other districts, including coastal areas like Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Puri, which are expected to receive heavy rainfall along with strong winds. Southern Odisha districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Nawrangpur, and Rayagada are also forecast to receive heavy to very heavy showers.
Potential Impacts and State Preparedness
The anticipated downpour brings with it several potential challenges. Urban and low-lying areas, particularly in cities like Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, are at risk of temporary waterlogging, which can disrupt traffic and daily life. In hilly regions, there is an increased risk of landslides. The state government, known for its 'Zero Casualty' policy during extreme weather, is on high alert. District administrations have been instructed to monitor the situation closely, with disaster response teams like the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire services personnel ready for deployment if needed. A few weeks prior, the government had already activated a contingency plan to tackle any irregularities in the monsoon season, highlighting its proactive approach.
A Safety Guide for Residents
With severe weather on the horizon, authorities have issued advisories for public safety. It is crucial for residents to take precautions to stay safe. During thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees or in open fields and stay indoors whenever possible. Before the heavy rains begin, secure any loose objects outside your home that could be affected by strong winds. Be prepared for potential power disruptions and have an emergency kit with essentials like a torch, first aid supplies, and dry food. Avoid driving through waterlogged streets, as the depth of the water can be deceptive. Farmers and fishermen have been specifically advised to be cautious and follow local weather updates closely before venturing out.
