Why Humidity Disrupts Your Sleep
Understanding why humidity is such a sleep thief is the first step to fighting back. Your body’s primary way of cooling down is through the evaporation of sweat. When the air is already saturated with water vapour—high humidity—that sweat can't evaporate
efficiently. This leaves you feeling sticky and overheated. High humidity can lead to more frequent awakenings and reduce the time you spend in the most restorative stages of sleep, like deep NREM and REM sleep. Studies show that the ideal humidity level for sleeping is between 30% and 50%. Anything higher can also encourage the growth of allergens like dust mites and mould, which can further disrupt rest.
Choose Your Sheets Wisely
The fabric you sleep on makes a significant difference. Your best defence is breathable, moisture-wicking materials. Natural fibres are far superior to synthetics like polyester, which trap heat and moisture. Look for sheets made from linen, cotton, or bamboo. Linen is a champion in humid conditions; its hollow fibres and open weave allow for excellent airflow and it can absorb a lot of moisture before feeling damp. Cotton, a versatile classic, is also a great choice, especially with a percale weave. This one-over-one-under weave creates a light, crisp fabric that stays cool to the touch. Bamboo-derived fabrics are known for being incredibly soft and effective at wicking moisture away from the skin, helping you stay dry.
Lighten Your Sleepwear Layers
The same logic that applies to your sheets also applies to your pyjamas. Heavy, synthetic sleepwear will only trap heat and sweat against your skin. Instead, opt for lightweight, loose-fitting sleepwear made from the same breathable materials: cotton, linen, or bamboo. For many, sleeping in minimal clothing or even nude can be the most effective way to allow the body to regulate its temperature without any fabric interference. The goal is to create as little insulation as possible, giving your skin maximum exposure to the air, which aids the cooling process throughout the night.
Master the Art of Airflow
Steady air movement is crucial on a humid night. While an air conditioner is effective because it actively removes both heat and humidity from the air, a well-placed fan can also provide significant relief. A fan works by moving air across your skin, which helps speed up the evaporation of sweat, creating a cooling effect. For optimal results, create cross-ventilation by opening windows on opposite sides of your room to allow a natural breeze to pass through. A ceiling fan can push warm air up and away, while a pedestal fan can be directed to create a consistent breeze over your bed. Some people even find success placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan to create a makeshift cooling mist.
Adjust Your Pre-Sleep Routine
A few simple tweaks to your evening habits can set the stage for a cooler night. Taking a lukewarm or cool shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature, making it easier to drift off. Avoid hot showers, as they can have a rebound effect and make you feel warmer. Stay hydrated with cool water throughout the day and evening, but try to limit liquid intake right before bed to avoid waking up. During the day, keep your bedroom curtains or blinds closed to block out the sun and prevent the room from heating up. This makes it easier to achieve a cooler sleeping environment when night falls.
