The Reason Behind the Disruption
The Northern Railway's Ambala Division has scheduled this extensive block to facilitate the redevelopment of Chandigarh Railway Station. The work, managed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), includes erecting a new through-roof structure and dismantling
the old foot-over-bridge girders. This crucial upgrade, part of a ₹462 crore project, cannot be completed safely while the station is fully operational. To minimise passenger inconvenience, the work has been divided into three 12-day phases, running from September 10 to October 15.
Fully Cancelled Train Services
A total of 12 train services will be completely cancelled throughout the block period, affecting 442 individual trips between September 9 and October 16. This is the most significant impact of the traffic block. Key services that will not run include popular routes connecting Chandigarh with Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Delhi. Among the notable cancellations are the Amritsar-Chandigarh-Amritsar Express (14541/14542), the Chandigarh-Ferozepur-Chandigarh Express (14629/14630), and passenger services on the Ambala-Kalka and Kalka-Delhi routes. Passengers with bookings on these trains are advised to seek alternative travel arrangements.
Trains Short-Terminated or Originating Elsewhere
Many passengers will find their journeys partially cancelled, with several trains being 'short-terminated' or 'short-originated' at nearby stations, primarily Ambala Cantt and SAS Nagar (Mohali). This means trains that usually run to or from Chandigarh will now stop or start at these alternative stations. For instance, services like the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath (12983/12984) and the Udaipur-Chandigarh Express (20989/20990) will be terminated at or originate from Ambala Cantt on specific dates. Passengers on these routes will need to arrange their own transport for the Ambala-Chandigarh leg of their journey.
Diverted Routes and Platform Changes
A smaller number of trains will be diverted to bypass Chandigarh completely. On specific dates like October 3 and 10, the Lalkuan-Amritsar Superfast Express (14615/14616) will run via Sirhind, skipping both Chandigarh and Mohali stations. Furthermore, a total of 76 trains will have their platforms changed at various points during the 36-day block. This includes major services like the New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express (12011/12012) and the Vande Bharat Express (20977/78). Relying on your usual platform will not be possible, making it essential to check display boards and listen for announcements at the station.
Essential Travel Planning Advice
Given the scale of these changes, planning ahead is non-negotiable. The most crucial step for any traveller is to verify their train's status before leaving home. Railway authorities strongly advise using the official NTES app or the Rail Madad helpline at 139 for the most current information on schedules, cancellations, and platform changes. To ease the burden, temporary stops have been added at SAS Nagar (Mohali) for eight long-distance trains, including the Amritsar-Dehradun service (14631/14632). For routes where trains are cancelled or short-terminated at Ambala, passengers should consider inter-state bus services from Chandigarh's ISBTs as a primary alternative. Allow for significant extra travel time, especially if you need to commute between Chandigarh and Ambala to catch a connecting service.
