Limitations of a Legendary Suit
The spacesuits of the Apollo program were a monumental achievement, keeping astronauts alive in the vacuum of space. However, they were far from perfect. The A7L suits were incredibly rigid and bulky. Pressurized with oxygen, they resisted bending at
the joints, forcing astronauts into a slow, careful gait to maintain balance. This stiffness made it extremely difficult to kneel, bend over, or pick up objects—fundamental tasks for geological fieldwork. If an astronaut fell, getting back up was a serious challenge. These mobility restrictions limited the scope of scientific work that could be accomplished during moonwalks, which were already constrained by the suit's life support systems.
A New Commercial Approach
For the Artemis program, NASA has adopted a new strategy. Instead of developing the suits entirely in-house, the agency has partnered with private industry, setting the technical and safety standards while allowing companies to innovate. Houston-based Axiom Space won a major contract to develop the moonwalking suits for the Artemis III mission. Known as the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), this next-generation suit builds upon NASA's own research while incorporating new technologies and a fresh design philosophy. This commercial partnership aims to deliver capable, reliable, and more affordable systems for sustained lunar exploration. Axiom Space even collaborated with Italian fashion house Prada to refine the outer protective layer.
Engineered for Natural Movement
The headline feature of the AxEMU is its incredible leap in mobility. Unlike the one-piece, custom-tailored Apollo suits, the AxEMU has a modular design with a range of sizes to fit a broader diversity of astronauts, a key goal for the Artemis program. The most significant upgrades are in the joints. The suit incorporates advanced bearings and flexible components in the hips, waist, legs, and even the boots, allowing for a more natural walking motion. Astronauts testing the prototypes have demonstrated the ability to squat, lunge, and twist with a level of agility unimaginable in the Apollo era. This enhanced flexibility means future moonwalkers can traverse rocky, uneven terrain more easily and perform complex scientific tasks without fighting their own suit.
More Than Just a Walk
The AxEMU is not just about easier walking; it’s a wearable spacecraft designed for a new era of lunar science. The portable life support system in the backpack is upgraded to support moonwalks, or EVAs (Extravehicular Activities), lasting up to eight hours. The helmet features built-in lights and an HD camera, giving scientists on Earth a stunning first-person view. Protection has also been enhanced. The suit is designed to withstand the extreme temperatures of the lunar south pole—a key destination for Artemis missions—and offers better shielding against abrasive lunar dust, which was a major nuisance during the Apollo missions. Getting into the suit is also different; astronauts will enter through a rear hatch on the back rather than assembling multiple, layered components.
