Verify All Personal Information
This may seem basic, but it's a common source of errors. Double-check that your name, PAN, and Aadhaar details are exactly as they appear on your official documents. Any mismatch, even a small spelling error, can cause significant processing delays. Also,
confirm that your registered mobile number and email address on the e-filing portal are correct and active, as all official communication from the Income Tax Department will be sent to them. This simple step is vital for a smooth filing process and timely receipt of any refunds.
Match Your Income with AIS and Form 26AS
This is arguably the most critical check before filing. Your Annual Information Statement (AIS) provides a comprehensive view of all your financial transactions that the tax department is aware of, including salary, interest income, dividends, and property sales. Form 26AS is your tax passbook, showing all tax deducted at source (TDS) and tax collected at source (TCS) against your PAN. Mismatches between what you declare in your ITR and what is shown in these documents are a primary trigger for tax notices. Carefully reconcile the income and tax credit figures. If you find discrepancies in the AIS, such as duplicate entries, you can submit feedback directly on the portal. However, remember that even if some income (like interest from a savings account) is missing from your AIS, you are still legally required to report it.
Claim All Eligible Deductions Correctly
In the rush to file, it’s easy to either miss deductions you’re entitled to or make incorrect claims. Go over your investments and expenses for the financial year one last time. This includes contributions to Provident Fund, life insurance premiums, ELSS, health insurance premiums (Section 80D), and any donations made (Section 80G). Ensure you have valid proofs for all deductions you are claiming. While you don't need to submit these proofs with your ITR, you must be able to produce them if the tax department asks for them later. Over-claiming or claiming deductions without proof can lead to penalties.
Select the Correct ITR Form and Tax Regime
Filing the wrong ITR form will result in your return being classified as 'defective', and you will have to refile. For most salaried individuals without business income, ITR-1 or ITR-2 is applicable, and the deadline is July 31. Those with business income not requiring an audit file ITR-3 or ITR-4, and their deadline for AY 2026-27 is August 31. Also, confirm whether you are opting for the Old or New Tax Regime. This choice impacts which deductions and exemptions you can claim, so make sure your return reflects the regime that is most beneficial for you. A wrong selection here can significantly alter your tax liability.
Pre-Validate Your Bank Account for Refund
If you are expecting a tax refund, this step is non-negotiable. The Income Tax Department will only issue refunds to bank accounts that are pre-validated on the e-filing portal. Log in to your account and ensure the bank account where you wish to receive your refund is listed and shows a 'Validated' status. You must also nominate this account for the refund. An incorrect or non-validated account number is a leading cause of refund delays. Verifying this takes only a few minutes and ensures your refund is credited smoothly.
Don't Forget to E-Verify Your Return
Filing your ITR is only half the job done. The process is complete only after you verify your return. If you fail to verify your ITR within 30 days of filing, it will be considered 'invalid' or as if it was never filed at all. This can attract a penalty for late filing. The easiest way to verify is through e-verification using an Aadhaar OTP or your pre-validated bank account. This final step authenticates your return and sends it for processing.
