A Cleaner, Faster Interface
The most immediately noticeable change is the redesigned user interface. Responding to years of user feedback, the new IRCTC website and app feature a cleaner, more intuitive layout. Unnecessary pop-ups, flashing advertisements, and repeated CAPTCHA prompts
that frequently interrupted the booking process have been significantly reduced or removed entirely. This streamlined design not only makes navigation easier but also contributes to faster page loading times, a common pain point for users, especially on slower networks. The goal is to reduce the number of steps and clicks required to book a ticket, making the entire process less frustrating.
Enhanced Booking Capacity
One of the most critical upgrades is a massive boost in the platform's backend capacity. The new system is designed to handle a significantly higher volume of traffic, a change aimed directly at improving performance during peak booking hours, such as the frantic Tatkal window. The upgraded portal can now reportedly process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a substantial increase from the previous capacity of around 32,000. Furthermore, the system's ability to handle enquiries has been scaled up to manage over 40 lakh queries per minute, compared to the earlier 4 lakh. This enhanced infrastructure is expected to reduce server crashes and slowdowns, offering a more stable and reliable booking experience for everyone.
Smarter, AI-Powered Features
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the heart of several new functionalities. The platform now includes AI-powered tools to combat unfair booking practices by identifying and blocking bots that attempt to grab tickets faster than humanly possible. For passengers, this means a fairer chance at securing tickets, especially during high-demand periods. Another key AI feature is the improved waitlist confirmation prediction, which offers passengers a more accurate assessment of their chances of getting a confirmed seat. Some services, like IRCTC-authorised partner ConfirmTkt, are also integrating conversational AI agents that allow users to find available seats using simple voice or text commands in English and Hindi.
More Control and Transparency for Passengers
The new update empowers passengers with more information and choice. A new 'fare calendar' feature allows travellers to easily compare ticket prices across different dates, helping them find more economical options. Perhaps one of the most requested features is the ability to see seat availability across all classes (Sleeper, 3A, 2A, etc.) on a single screen, eliminating the need to check each class individually. Subject to availability, passengers will also have the option to select their preferred seat or berth during the booking process, similar to booking a seat in a cinema. The platform has also been made more accessible with support for multiple Indian languages.
Integrated Services on a Single Platform
Beyond just booking tickets, the modernization aims to turn the IRCTC portal into a comprehensive travel hub. The platform offers integrated booking for services like e-catering, allowing passengers to order food directly to their seats from a wide variety of vendors. The process for booking tickets with special concessions for Divyangjan, students, and patients has also been simplified and integrated into the main platform. Other services, such as booking retiring rooms at stations and even flights or holiday packages, are also part of the unified portal, creating a one-stop solution for travellers' needs.
