The End of an Era
For years, complimentary airport lounge access was a powerful marketing tool for credit card issuers in India. It was a simple, attractive perk that turned even entry-level cards into a ticket for a more pleasant travel experience. That widespread availability,
however, is now being systematically rolled back. Several of India's largest banks, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, have introduced new policies that link lounge access directly to spending. The message is clear: the perk is no longer a given. It is now a reward reserved for customers who actively use their cards for significant retail purchases. This shift means cardholders can no longer rely on just carrying the right plastic; they must now be conscious of meeting specific spending targets every few months.
Why Are Banks Making This Change?
The primary driver behind this policy shift is cost. As more and more cards offered lounge access, lounges became increasingly crowded, and the expense for banks soared. Banks pay a fee to lounge operators for every customer who enters using one of their cards, a cost that has reportedly risen sharply in recent years. What was once a manageable expense associated with premium clients became a significant financial burden as millions of cardholders began using the facility regularly. By implementing spending criteria, banks aim to achieve two goals: first, to control these rising costs, and second, to ensure that this expensive perk is directed towards their most engaged and profitable customers. It’s a strategic move to make the benefit more sustainable and reward genuine card usage rather than just card ownership.
A Look at the New Spending Rules
The new requirements vary by bank and card type, but a clear trend has emerged. Typically, cardholders must now meet a minimum spending threshold in a preceding calendar quarter to unlock lounge access for the current quarter. For example, many Axis Bank credit cards now require a minimum spend of ₹50,000 in the previous three months to grant domestic lounge access. Similarly, ICICI Bank has implemented a spend-linked rule, requiring users of many of its cards to have spent at least ₹35,000 in the prior quarter. HDFC Bank has also revised its criteria across several cards. To access benefits on its Regalia Gold card, users must now spend ₹60,000 in a quarter, while some debit card users need to spend ₹10,000 quarterly to receive a digital lounge voucher. Some cards, like the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card and RuPay Platinum debit cards, have had their complimentary lounge benefits removed entirely.
From Swiping to Vouchers
In addition to spending thresholds, banks are also changing how customers access lounges. The simple act of swiping a card at the reception is being replaced by more complex, digitally managed systems. HDFC Bank, for instance, is moving towards a voucher-based model for many of its cards. Eligible customers who meet the spending criteria will receive an SMS or email with a link to claim a voucher. This voucher code or QR code must then be presented at the lounge for entry. This change requires more planning from the traveller. You can no longer just show up and expect your card to work; you must now monitor your spending, ensure you have qualified, and claim your voucher in advance of your trip.
What Should You Do Now?
For travellers who value lounge access, these changes necessitate a re-evaluation of their credit card strategy. The first step is to review the terms and conditions of all your current credit and debit cards to understand the new rules. Check your bank's website or app for the latest updates on spending requirements and lounge lists. Next, analyze your own spending patterns. Will your typical quarterly spending meet the new thresholds for your preferred card? If not, you may need to consolidate your spending onto a single card to ensure you qualify. Alternatively, if you are a very frequent traveller, it might be time to consider upgrading to a super-premium card. While these cards come with high annual fees, many still offer unlimited or more generous lounge access without strict spending conditions. Finally, always double-check your eligibility and the specific lounge's participation in your card's program before heading to the airport.
