Part 1: The Post-Monsoon Recovery
The heavy rains can be harsh on our homes. Before you bring out the fairy lights, it's crucial to address the after-effects of a long, wet season. This first phase is all about repair and recovery, ensuring your home is healthy, safe, and ready for the next
chapter.
Check for Leaks and Dampness
A thorough inspection of your walls and ceilings is the most critical first step. Look for any signs of water seepage, damp patches, or paint bubbling. These are not just cosmetic issues; they can lead to mould growth and structural weakness if ignored. Address any leaks immediately, which might involve sealing cracks on exterior walls or fixing roof issues. Use anti-fungal treatments on any affected areas to prevent mould from spreading, especially as the weather remains humid.
Clear Drains and Gutters
Leaves, debris, and dirt can clog rooftop gutters and balcony drains during the monsoon, leading to water overflow and potential damage. Now that the rains have subsided, it’s essential to clear these out completely. Ensure water can flow freely away from your home's foundation. While you're at it, check the drains in your kitchen and bathrooms, using a mix of baking soda and hot water to clear any internal build-up.
Air Out Everything
Moisture gets trapped everywhere during the monsoon. Open up your windows and doors to let fresh air and sunlight circulate. Take out heavy curtains, carpets, and rugs that have been stored away or have absorbed dampness. If possible, give them a sunbath for a day to kill any musty smells and mildew. Upholstered furniture can also benefit from being vacuumed and aired out.
Part 2: The Festive-Ready Makeover
With the necessary repairs done, you now have a clean and stable canvas. The second phase of the October reset is all about deep cleaning and decorating. This is the traditional 'Diwali safai'—a ritual that prepares the home to welcome guests and positive energy.
The Great Declutter and Deep Clean
Festive preparation traditionally begins with decluttering. Go through each room and clear out items you no longer need, making space for a fresh start. Once you've decluttered, begin the deep clean. Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures, wipe down walls, and scrub floors, paying special attention to corners. In the kitchen, clean out cabinets and deep clean appliances like the chimney and microwave. The bathroom also needs attention; scrub tiles and fittings until they sparkle.
Refresh and Brighten Your Spaces
A fresh coat of paint on a wall that was affected by damp can instantly lift a room. Now is also the time to polish wooden furniture that may have lost its lustre due to humidity. Wash and change your soft furnishings like cushion covers and curtains. Swapping out heavier, darker monsoon fabrics for lighter, brighter ones can transform the feel of your living spaces.
Welcome the Festive Glow
With a clean home, the fun part begins. Decorating for the festive season is about creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Start with the entrance; a beautiful toran (door hanging) and a colourful rangoli are traditional symbols of welcome. Plan your lighting scheme with diyas, candles, and string lights to create a magical glow. Fresh flowers, especially marigolds, are a versatile and auspicious addition, whether used in garlands or arranged in bowls.
