Master the App’s Built-in Filters
The fastest way to sort the good from the bad is to let the app do the work for you. Before you even start browsing, dive into the filter options. Most Indian grocery apps like Zepto, Blinkit, and BigBasket allow you to filter products by dietary needs.
You can often select for 'low sugar', 'high fibre', 'organic', or 'low sodium'. Applying these filters at the start of your search automatically removes items that don't meet your health criteria, saving you the time and effort of reading every single label.
Look for the FSSAI Veg/Non-Veg Logo
One of the most straightforward checks you can do is to look for the mandatory symbols set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). All packaged foods in India must display a green dot inside a green square for vegetarian products or a brown dot inside a brown square for non-vegetarian items. These logos are usually displayed prominently on the product images in the app, giving you an instant, at-a-glance confirmation without needing to zoom into the fine print.
Apply the 'First Five' Ingredient Rule
You don't always need to read the entire ingredient list to get the gist of a product. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, meaning the first few ingredients make up the majority of the item. A quick scan of the first five ingredients tells you the product's primary components. If sugar, refined flour (maida), or hydrogenated oils are among the top five, you have a good idea of its nutritional profile. This hack helps you make a quick decision without getting lost in a long list of additives.
Don't Be Fooled by Front-of-Pack Claims
The front of a digital package is prime marketing real estate. Claims like '100% natural', 'made with real fruit', or 'healthy' are often designed to sell, not inform. In fact, FSSAI has issued notices to numerous companies for potentially misleading claims. Always be sceptical. A 'baked, not fried' snack can still be high in sodium, and a product labelled 'no added sugar' might contain high levels of natural sweeteners. Use the front-of-pack claim as a starting point, but always swipe to the nutrition panel and ingredient list for the real story.
Learn Key Terms for a Quick Scan
Knowing what words to look for can significantly speed up the process. Instead of reading every detail, scan the ingredient list for specific keywords you want to avoid. Common culprits include 'partially hydrogenated oil' (a source of trans fat), 'high-fructose corn syrup', and various names for sugar like dextrose, maltose, and sucrose. On the flip side, look for positive keywords like 'whole grain' or 'whole wheat' as one of the first ingredients. This targeted scanning is much faster than a full read-through.
Focus on Key Numbers in the Nutrition Panel
The nutrition facts panel can be overwhelming. To read it quickly, focus on just a few key metrics that matter most to your health goals. Start with the serving size, as all other values are based on it. Then, quickly check the amounts of added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat. Comparing these few numbers between two different brands of, say, pasta sauce, is much quicker than analysing every single nutrient listed and can lead to a healthier choice in seconds.
Create 'Healthy Choice' Shopping Lists
Most grocery apps allow you to save past purchases or create custom shopping lists. Once you find products that meet your nutritional standards, save them to a dedicated 'Healthy Staples' or 'Approved Snacks' list. This creates a pre-vetted catalogue of items you can re-order with a single tap. Building these lists takes a bit of effort initially, but it saves an enormous amount of time on future shopping trips, as you no longer need to re-evaluate labels for your regular purchases.
