Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
High humidity means more sweat and oil, creating a perfect storm for clogged pores. The impulse might be to wash your face constantly, but over-washing can strip your skin's protective barrier, leading to even more oil production. The solution is to cleanse
thoroughly just twice a day. For your evening cleanse, consider the double cleansing method: start with an oil-based cleanser to break down sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum, followed by a gentle, water-based face wash to clean the skin itself. This ensures you remove all impurities without being harsh. For morning, a single cleanse with your gentle face wash is sufficient.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It’s a common mistake to skip moisturiser when your skin feels oily. However, humid, oily skin still needs hydration. When your skin is dehydrated, it can actually produce more oil to compensate. The trick is to swap heavy creams for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. Look for gel-based or water-based moisturisers that absorb quickly without feeling greasy or sticky. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin are excellent as they hydrate the skin by drawing in moisture without adding weight.
Don't Skip Sunscreen on Cloudy Days
This is the biggest myth of monsoon skincare. Clouds block visible sunlight and heat, but not all harmful UV rays. Up to 80% of UVA and UVB radiation can penetrate cloud cover, leading to tanning, pigmentation, and long-term skin damage. In fact, under certain conditions, cloud cover can scatter UV rays and increase their intensity. Since you'll be dealing with humidity and potential rain, opt for a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with at least SPF 30. A lightweight gel or fluid texture will feel more comfortable and is less likely to clog pores.
Exfoliate, But With Caution
With oil and sweat in overdrive, dead skin cells are more likely to get trapped, leading to a dull complexion and breakouts. Regular exfoliation is key to keeping pores clear. However, the humid weather can also make skin more sensitive. Avoid harsh physical scrubs, which can cause micro-tears and irritation. Instead, opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant containing acids like salicylic acid (BHA) or glycolic acid (AHA) once or twice a week. Salicylic acid is particularly good for the rainy season as it's oil-soluble and can penetrate deep into pores to clear them out.
Incorporate Key Active Ingredients
A few smart ingredients can make a huge difference in humid weather. Niacinamide is a superstar for the monsoon as it helps regulate oil production, minimise the appearance of pores, and calm redness. If you're prone to acne, a product with salicylic acid can be a game-changer for treating and preventing breakouts. For lightweight hydration, hyaluronic acid is your best friend. These can be found in serums or moisturisers and can be layered effectively in a minimalist routine.
Watch Out for Fungal Infections
The damp, humid environment is a breeding ground for fungi. This can lead to issues like fungal acne, which presents as small, uniform, itchy bumps, often on the forehead and chest. It's different from regular bacterial acne and won't respond to typical acne treatments. To prevent it, keep your skin clean and dry, change out of sweaty clothes promptly, and wear breathable cotton fabrics. If you suspect you have a fungal issue, using an anti-dandruff shampoo with ketoconazole as a face or body wash for a few minutes a couple of times a week can often help, though it's always best to consult a professional.
