You don't need expensive equipment, a gym membership, or even much space. All you need is a stable chair and a timer. The 30-second chair-stand test is exactly what it sounds like: a test to see how many times you can stand up from a seated position and sit back
down in half a minute, without using your hands. While it might sound deceptively simple, it’s a powerful indicator of functional fitness — the kind of strength that helps you navigate daily life with ease and independence.
How to Perform the Test Correctly
To try it yourself, find a sturdy chair without armrests, preferably with a seat height of about 17 inches, and place it against a wall so it won’t slide. Sit in the middle of the chair with your feet flat on the floor and your back straight. Cross your arms over your chest, with your hands on your opposite shoulders. When you’re ready, start a 30-second timer and begin. Rise to a full standing position and then sit back down completely. Count how many full repetitions you can complete. If you are more than halfway up when the timer ends, you can count it as a full stand. The key is not to use your arms to push off your legs or the chair. If you have to use your hands, your score is zero.

Studies have shown it's a reliable and valid indicator of lower body strength and can even help predict the risk of falls and mortality in older populations.
What Your Score Reveals About You
The number of repetitions you complete is a direct reflection of your lower body strength and muscular endurance. While norms vary slightly across different studies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides benchmarks primarily for older adults. For example, for men aged 60-64, a score below 14 is considered below average, while for women in the same age group, it's below 12. For younger, active adults, scores can be much higher, with one study showing an average of 33 repetitions for those aged 19-35. A lower score, regardless of age, can indicate a need to focus on building strength in your legs and core.
