A New Daily Connection to the Coast
In a move set to boost tourism and regional connectivity, Central Railway has inaugurated a new daily express train service between Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Sawantwadi Road in the south Konkan. This service, which had its
inaugural run on September 3, 2026, addresses a long-standing demand for better connectivity to key Konkan destinations like Kankavli, Kudal, and Sawantwadi. The train starts from a central point in Mumbai, making it more accessible for many travellers. Comprising a mix of AC First Class, AC-2 Tier, AC-3 Tier, Sleeper, and General coaches, the train offers options for various budgets, enhancing access to the region's picturesque beaches, historic forts, and tranquil towns.
Why September is Konkan's Secret Season
While many travellers wait for winter, September is arguably one of the best times to experience the Konkan. The monsoon rains have subsided, but their magic remains, leaving the landscape exceptionally lush and green. This period marks the sweet spot when waterfalls are still flowing, the weather is pleasant, and the tourist rush has yet to begin. The air is fresh, the paddy fields are a stunning shade of emerald, and the sea begins to calm down. Visitors can explore the historic Ratnadurg Fort, which offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, or visit Thiba Palace, a structure with a unique history. The journey itself, especially the stretch from Ratnagiri southwards towards Goa, is considered one of the most scenic in India, featuring tall viaducts and wide green valleys.
Discovering Sawantwadi and Southern Charms
The train's final destination, Sawantwadi Road, is a gateway to the southernmost part of the Konkan in Maharashtra, a region known for its distinct culture and natural beauty. Sawantwadi itself is famous for its traditional wooden toys and the beautiful Moti Talao (lake) located in the centre of the town. From here, travellers can easily access the serene hill station of Amboli, known for its dense forests and numerous waterfalls, which are particularly spectacular post-monsoon. The popular beach destinations of Tarkarli and Malvan, famous for their clear waters and opportunities for water sports, are also within reach, making Sawantwadi an excellent endpoint for a diverse coastal holiday.
Planning Your September Trip
With the launch of this new daily service and numerous special trains for the festive season, planning a Konkan trip has become more feasible. It's advisable to book your tickets well in advance, especially for weekend or festival travel, as demand on this route is high. When booking, remember that for a southbound journey from Mumbai, a seat on the right-hand side of the train will generally offer better views of the valleys and the sea. Pack light clothing with a mix of cottons and quick-drying fabrics, along with a light jacket for cooler evenings and an umbrella for the occasional September shower. From stations like Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi Road, local auto-rickshaws and taxis are available to get you to your final destination, but it's always wise to agree on the fare beforehand.
