The Indian Railways has significantly boosted connectivity between South Gujarat and Southern Rajasthan by approving a new Vande Bharat Express service directly connecting Surat and Udaipur. This semi-high-speed train, numbered 26903/26904, is set to
provide a much faster and more comfortable travel option for passengers. The service replaces the previous Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, extending the route to Surat to create a more comprehensive link between the two major states. Operated by Western Railway, this train is designed to cover the extensive distance in approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes, making day trips and business travel more feasible than ever. The train is expected to run six days a week, with Tuesday being the only exception.
Starting the Journey in Gujarat
The journey north begins from Surat, a major commercial hub in Gujarat. The first leg of the trip covers several key industrial and cultural centres within the state. After departing Asarva, the train heads north, crossing the Gujarat-Rajasthan border. The first stops in Rajasthan are Shamlaji Road and Dungarpur. Shamlaji is a significant pilgrimage site, and its inclusion as a stop offers pilgrims a convenient travel option. Dungarpur is the next major halt, a city known for its unique architecture and tribal heritage. This part of the journey showcases the newly converted broad-gauge line, which has opened up faster and more efficient travel through the Aravalli hills, a region previously served by a slower metre-gauge line. The improved infrastructure allows the Vande Bharat to maintain a good speed, significantly cutting down travel time compared to older services.
The Final Stretch to Udaipur
As the train moves deeper into the Mewar region of Rajasthan, it makes its final stops before reaching the destination. The train halts at Zawar, a town historically known for its zinc mines, some of the oldest in the world. This stop provides access to the industrial belt south of Udaipur. From Zawar, it's a short journey to the final destination, Udaipur City. This last leg of the route offers scenic views as the landscape becomes more hilly and rugged, building anticipation for arrival in the picturesque city. For the return journey, the Udaipur City-Surat Vande Bharat (Train No. 26904) is scheduled to depart from Udaipur at 3:35 PM, reaching Surat at 11:00 PM. The train consists of an 8-car coach composition and runs six days a week, remaining non-operational on Tuesdays. Tickets can be booked through the official Indian Railways website and app. Given the popularity of both Vande Bharat services and the destinations, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons and holidays.
