The Old Story: A ‘Universal Urban Effect’
For years, the prevailing scientific narrative has been that urbanization has a distinct, and mostly negative, effect on the gut microbiome. Studies from around the world consistently showed that as people move from rural to urban environments, the diversity of their gut bacteria tends to decrease. This loss of diversity is often linked to a “Westernized” lifestyle common in cities: diets high in processed foods and low in fibre, increased use of antibiotics, and less exposure to the natural environment. In contrast, rural populations, often consuming traditional, high-fibre diets and living in closer contact with natural environments, typically showed a richer and more varied gut microbiome. This led to a widely accepted theory of a 'universal urban effect'—that city living, by its nature, diminishes our gut health.
New South Asian Research Changes the Narrative
A major new study published in July 2026 has introduced a crucial twist to this story. An international team of researchers conducted one of the most culturally and geographically diverse surveys of the South Asian gut microbiome to date, looking at communities across India and Sri Lanka. The project, called the South Asian MicroBiome ARray (SAMBAR), studied 575 adults from ten different communities, comparing individuals living in their ancestral villages with those who had moved to urban centres. The findings were surprising. While urbanization did have an influence, it was not the single most important factor. Instead, geography and community affiliation—meaning, which specific community a person belonged to—explained more of the variation in gut bacteria than a simple rural or urban label. The way the microbiome changed with city life was not uniform; it was different for each community, reflecting local diets and culture.
Why Isn't the Effect Universal?
The study suggests that the impact of moving to a city is not a one-size-fits-all process. The changes depend heavily on the starting point. For example, the research highlighted that local culture and diet play a huge role in how the microbiome adapts. Some urban South Asian groups retained gut bacteria associated with digesting wheat and dairy, suggesting that traditional dietary patterns can persist even in a city environment. This counters the assumption that urbanization automatically means a complete shift to processed foods. The study makes it clear that to understand health, we need to move beyond a simple 'urban vs. rural' comparison and look at the specific cultural and dietary habits of different communities. Essentially, your community and cultural background may be more important for your gut health than just your post code.
What Does This Mean for Health in India?
This research is particularly important for India, which is experiencing rapid urbanization alongside a rising rate of cardiometabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The study did find that urbanization was consistently associated with an increase in certain bacteria linked to disease. For instance, the bacteria Megamonas, which is correlated with higher blood glucose and obesity, was more abundant in urban groups. However, the key takeaway is that the 'damage' from urbanization is not inevitable or uniform. The resilience of certain traditional dietary practices, even in cities, can offer a protective effect. This reinforces the value of traditional Indian diets rich in fibre, vegetables, and fermented foods. It suggests that maintaining cultural food traditions could be a powerful tool for safeguarding public health as more people move to cities. It is a call to action to not abandon these time-tested dietary patterns in the face of modernization.
