Indian Railways has recently approved a much-anticipated daily express train, strengthening the link between Mumbai and the southern Konkan coast. The service runs between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai and Sawantwadi Road. Operating
as Train No. 15087 and 15088, this service covers a 510-kilometre route, providing a significant boost for passengers who travel for tourism, education, and business. Unlike seasonal special trains that run during peak times like the Ganesh festival, this daily express provides a reliable, year-round option for residents and visitors alike, which has long been a demand for the region.
Key Stops and Regional Impact
The new express train includes 22 commercial halts at important towns, which is crucial for deeper regional connectivity. Key stops include Panvel, Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal, before terminating at Sawantwadi Road. This extensive list of stops is designed to improve access to several towns along the Konkan Railway network that are often bypassed by faster, long-distance trains. By linking the Mumbai Metropolitan Region directly with these smaller hubs, the railway aims to support the local economy, ease travel for daily commuters and students, and boost tourism to the Konkan's famous beaches, forts, and temples.
The Last-Mile Challenge
While the new train is a welcome development, regular travellers in the Konkan are familiar with a persistent challenge: last-mile connectivity. Many Konkan Railway stations were built for engineering efficiency, often located several kilometres outside the main towns they are named after. This geographic reality means that arriving at Chiplun station, for instance, doesn't put you directly in Chiplun town. This gap between the station and the final destination is what’s known as the 'last-mile problem'. It requires passengers to have a pre-planned strategy for the final leg of their journey, something that can be daunting for first-time visitors.

So, how do you cover that last mile? At most major stations like Ratnagiri, Chiplun, or Kudal, auto-rickshaws are the most common and readily available option.
