The Dangerous Combination of Heat and Humidity
For many, a heatwave is defined by the number on the thermometer. However, the true danger to the human body comes from the combination of high temperatures and high humidity. Our primary cooling mechanism is sweating; as sweat evaporates from our skin,
it takes heat with it. But when the air is already saturated with moisture, as it is during the monsoon, this evaporation process slows down dramatically or stops altogether. The body continues to produce heat but can no longer effectively get rid of it. This can lead to a rapid increase in core body temperature, raising the risk of heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and life-threatening heatstroke.
Understanding Wet-Bulb Temperature
This is where the concept of 'wet-bulb temperature' becomes crucial. It is not just the air temperature, but a combined measure of heat and humidity that reflects the actual stress on a human body. Think of it as the lowest temperature your skin can reach through sweating. As the wet-bulb temperature rises, our ability to cool down diminishes. Scientists consider a wet-bulb temperature of 35°C as the theoretical limit of human survivability, beyond which even a healthy person resting in the shade with ample water can overheat. Recent studies show that parts of India are increasingly experiencing dangerously high wet-bulb temperatures, not just in the dry summer months but also during the humid monsoon season.
Monsoon Patterns Are Shifting the Risk
Climate change is altering traditional weather patterns. Research indicates that the monsoon is no longer a guaranteed period of relief from heat stress. Instead, it is creating a prolonged season of danger. One study found that during active monsoon spells with heavy rain, northern India faces a higher risk of moist heat because the influx of moisture pushes already high humidity to dangerous levels. Conversely, during 'break' periods in the monsoon with less rain and clearer skies, southern and eastern India are more vulnerable as humidity remains high while the sun quickly raises temperatures. This effectively means that large parts of the country face a significant moist-heat threat throughout the entire season.
Who Is Most Vulnerable?
The risks of humid heat are not distributed equally. Outdoor workers, such as construction laborers, farmers, and street vendors, are on the frontlines, as their work exposes them to the elements with little chance for respite. The elderly, young children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions like cardiovascular or respiratory issues are also highly susceptible. Furthermore, a significant portion of India's population lives in homes with poor ventilation and without access to air conditioning, making it difficult to cool down even at night. This turns homes into heat traps, offering no escape from the oppressive conditions.
Building Year-Round Heat Resilience
Recognizing this extended threat, experts and authorities are pushing for a shift from seasonal responses to year-round heat resilience strategies. This involves more than just temporary cooling centres. Cities and states are developing Heat Action Plans (HAPs) that focus on early warning systems, public awareness campaigns, and capacity building for healthcare professionals. Long-term solutions are also crucial. These include urban planning that incorporates more green spaces, promoting passive cooling techniques in architecture like cool roofs and better ventilation, and restoring water bodies to help lower ambient temperatures. These measures aim to create a built environment that is fundamentally better equipped to handle extreme heat, regardless of the season.
