Before You Go: The Visa Question
The best news for Indian passport holders is the waived fee for Sri Lanka's Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). As of mid-2026, India is one of several countries whose citizens do not need to pay for the 30-day tourist ETA. However, 'free' does not mean
'optional'. You must apply for and receive your ETA online through the official government portal before you travel. Arriving without a pre-approved ETA is not an option, as visa-on-arrival is no longer available. The process is straightforward and typically approved quickly, but it is a mandatory step. This free ETA allows for a 30-day stay with double-entry.
Day 1: Arrival and Ascent to Kandy
Fly into Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). From here, your journey to the cultural heart of Sri Lanka begins. The most efficient way to reach Kandy is by pre-booked car, a journey of about three to four hours. After checking into your hotel, spend the late afternoon acclimatising with a gentle walk around the serene Kandy Lake. As evening descends, make your way to the city’s most revered site: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa). The temple complex is most atmospheric during the evening puja (ceremony), when drumming and rituals bring the sacred space to life. For dinner, dive into the local cuisine with a classic Sri Lankan rice and curry.
Day 2: Kandy’s Royal Gardens and Culture
Dedicate your second day to exploring the lush landscapes surrounding Kandy. Start your morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya, a short drive from the city. These magnificent gardens are famous for their vast collection of orchids, towering bamboo groves, and an impressive avenue of royal palms. You can easily spend a few hours wandering the beautiful grounds. In the afternoon, explore the bustling city centre and its colonial-era architecture. In the evening, immerse yourself in local culture by attending a traditional Kandyan dance performance, a vibrant spectacle of athletic dance, colourful costumes, and fire-walking that offers a fascinating glimpse into the island's artistic heritage.
Day 3: The Journey to Mirissa’s Coast
Today is a travel day, connecting the central highlands to the sun-drenched southern coast. The journey from Kandy to Mirissa is a long one, taking approximately six to seven hours by road. Hiring a private car is the most comfortable and direct option. Alternatively, you can take a scenic train from Kandy to Colombo (or a closer station like Maradana) and then connect to a coastal line train or bus towards Mirissa, though this will take longer. Break up the journey with a stop in Galle to briefly admire the famous Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Arrive in Mirissa by late afternoon, check into your beachside guesthouse, and unwind with the sound of the waves as your soundtrack. The sunset from Mirissa beach is your reward after a long day of travel.
Day 4: Mirissa’s Marine Life and Beaches
Mirissa is world-renowned for whale watching. The peak season runs from November to April, when blue whales and sperm whales are frequently spotted. While September is part of a secondary season, sightings are still possible, though less guaranteed. Tours depart early in the morning. If you're visiting outside peak season or prefer to stay on land, Mirissa offers plenty of other charms. Spend the day relaxing on the main beach, visit the picturesque Coconut Tree Hill for the perfect photo opportunity, or explore the more secluded Secret Beach. The waters around Mirissa are also great for snorkelling, with chances to spot sea turtles.
Day 5: A Final Sunrise and Departure
Wake up early for one last stroll along the beach and a final taste of fresh tropical fruit for breakfast. Depending on your flight schedule, you can enjoy a relaxed morning before starting the journey back to Colombo’s airport. The drive from Mirissa to the airport takes about two to three hours via the Southern Expressway. It is a straightforward trip that gives you time to reflect on the incredible diversity you've experienced in just five short days—from the cool, misty hills of Kandy to the warm, turquoise waters of Mirissa. This whirlwind tour offers a perfect snapshot of the beauty and charm of the Emerald Isle.
