The slow speed, averaging just over 10 km/h, is a blessing, allowing ample time to soak in the views, spot waterfalls, and capture countless photographs of the verdant landscape. Planning Your Scenic Ride
A trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway requires some planning due to its immense popularity. Tickets can be booked up to 120 days in advance on the IRCTC website, and they sell out fast. The main daily service runs from Mettupalayam (MTP) to Udagamandalam (UAM). For those short on time, the one-hour ride between Coonoor (ONR) and Ooty is a fantastic option that still covers some of the most beautiful scenery. To accommodate the tourist rush, especially during summer (April to June), Southern Railway often introduces special services. It's best to travel between October and June when the weather is pleasant, and the views are clear.
