This November, the rolling hills of Meghalaya are shedding their monsoon green for a spectacular coat of pink. The annual blooming of the Himalayan cherry blossoms is transforming the state into a dreamscape, drawing visitors from across the country.
A Unique Autumn Blossom
Unlike the famous spring cherry blossoms of Japan, Meghalaya’s spectacle is caused by the Prunus cerasoides, or wild Himalayan cherry tree, which blooms in autumn. This natural event transforms the landscape, particularly in and around the capital city of Shillong, into a vision of soft pink and white. The season typically runs from late October through November, with the peak bloom often occurring in the first half of the month. The cool, pleasant weather, with daytime temperatures between 12°C and 20°C, makes it an ideal time for sightseeing and outdoor activities.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026
Capitalising on this natural beauty, the state hosts the internationally acclaimed Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. In 2026, the main event is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. This ticketed festival has grown into one of Northeast India's biggest music and cultural events, moving to a new, larger permanent venue at the New Shillong Highland Grounds to accommodate the growing crowds. This year's lineup features major international artists like Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls, alongside a host of national and local talent. The festival is a vibrant mix of live music, cultural performances, art installations, and food stalls showcasing Meghalaya's unique flavours.
Where to Find the Best Blooms
While the festival is a major draw, you don't need a ticket to enjoy the blossoms themselves, which can be found across the city. Ward's Lake is one of the most popular spots, where the pink flowers create stunning reflections in the water. Other prime locations include the Shillong Golf Course, the area around the Polo Grounds, and the scenic roads leading to Upper Shillong. Even the drive from Guwahati to Shillong can offer glimpses of these beautiful trees lining the highway. For the best photographs, aim for the early morning or the 'golden hour' just before sunset, which happens around 4:30 PM in November.
Beyond the Blossoms: Exploring Meghalaya
November is an excellent month to explore the wider wonders of Meghalaya. The monsoon rains have subsided, leaving the waterfalls still flowing and the rivers crystal clear. A trip to Cherrapunji (Sohra) to see the majestic Nohkalikai Falls or the Seven Sisters Falls is a must. Another essential experience is a boat ride on the transparent waters of the Umngot River in Dawki. You can also visit Mawlynnong, famously known as 'Asia's Cleanest Village', or explore the fascinating Mawsmai Cave. For adventure seekers, the trek to the iconic Double Decker Living Root Bridge in Nongriat offers a rewarding challenge amidst lush greenery.
Reaching Shillong is most convenient via Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), which is wellconnected to major Indian cities. From Guwahati, it's a scenic threehour taxi or bus ride to Shillong. The smaller Umroi Airport (SHL) near Shillong has limited flight connectivity. Giventhe festival's popularity, it is crucial to book flights and accommodation well in advance, as hotels in Shillong fill up quickly. For getting around, local taxis are readily available. When packing, include warm clothes like jackets and sweaters forthe chilly evenings and comfortable walking shoes for sightseeing.
