Decode Official Weather Alerts
Your first and most crucial step is to check official forecasts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) uses a colour-coded system to issue warnings. A 'Green' alert means all is well, while 'Yellow' advises you to 'Be Aware' of potential disruptions.
An 'Orange' alert means 'Be Prepared' for significant disruptions to transport and power. A 'Red' alert is the most severe, meaning 'Take Action', as dangerous conditions are expected. These alerts, valid for up to five days, are based on the likelihood of an event and its potential impact. You can access these warnings through the official 'MAUSAM' app, which provides forecasts, radar images, and proactive alerts.
Learn to Read the Clouds
The sky itself is a massive weather map. Dark, dense, and towering cumulonimbus clouds are a clear sign of impending heavy rain, strong winds, and potentially thunderstorms. Flat, layered stratus clouds that cover the sky in a grey sheet also indicate approaching rain, though often more steady and less violent. Conversely, wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds generally signal fair weather. Paying attention to the clouds can give you a real-time, localised forecast that an app might miss, helping you decide whether to push on or find a safe place to stop.
Leverage Smart Weather Apps
Beyond the official IMD app, several others provide valuable, real-time data. Apps like Skymet Weather offer granular forecasts by analysing data from thousands of automatic weather stations across India. It provides details on temperature, lightning, and air pollution levels. AccuWeather is another reliable option known for its accuracy in many Indian cities. For specific dangers, the 'Damini' app, also from the government, provides lightning alerts. Having one or two of these on your phone and checking them at every stop is a non-negotiable part of modern monsoon travel.
Watch for Landslide Warning Signs
In hilly and mountainous regions, landslides are a primary danger during the monsoon. You must be vigilant for on-the-ground indicators. Listen for unusual sounds like rumbling, cracking trees, or rocks knocking together. Watch for sudden changes in water flow in streams or channels; if clear water suddenly turns muddy, it can signal a debris flow upstream. Other physical signs include new cracks appearing in the ground, leaning trees or poles, sunken roadbeds, and small collapses along the side of the road. If you see these signs, especially after heavy rain, the safest action is to turn back or move to higher, more stable ground immediately.
Your Vehicle is a Key Indicator
Before you even leave, a thorough vehicle check is essential. Ensure your tyres have at least 3mm of tread for good grip on wet roads. Worn tyres are a leading cause of skids. Check that your brakes, headlights, tail lights, and indicators are all in perfect working order. Wipers that streak or judder are dangerous and must be replaced. While on the road, your car continues to provide feedback. If you feel the steering go light or the car start to glide, you are likely hydroplaning. In this case, do not brake hard or swerve; ease off the accelerator until you feel the tyres regain grip. Reduced visibility due to heavy downpours is a clear signal to slow down significantly or pull over until the intensity lessens.
