A New Era of Spacewear
When NASA astronauts return to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years, they will be wearing spacesuits developed by a commercial partner, Axiom Space. This marks a strategic shift for the agency, which is purchasing moonwalking services from the company
rather than owning the suits outright. The new suit, called the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit or AxEMU, is the result of a collaboration that builds upon years of NASA's own research and prototype development. It represents a significant technological leap forward, designed specifically for the complex challenges of exploring the lunar South Pole. The partnership also includes Italian luxury fashion house Prada, which is lending its expertise in advanced materials and composites to help engineer the suit's outer layers.
Solving the Mobility Problem
Walking on the Moon is not as simple as it sounds, even with one-sixth of Earth's gravity. The pressurized, multi-layered suits of the Apollo missions were famously restrictive, making it difficult for astronauts to bend, kneel, or perform dexterous tasks. This limited the scope of scientific work they could accomplish. The new AxEMU suits are engineered to solve this very problem. Featuring innovative joints for the arms and legs, the design allows for a much greater range of motion. Astronauts testing the new systems have been able to demonstrate walking, kneeling, and simulating the collection of geology samples with far greater ease than their predecessors. This enhanced flexibility is crucial for the Artemis missions, which aim to conduct more complex scientific research on the lunar surface.
Designed for a New Generation
Beyond flexibility, the AxEMU is designed to be more inclusive. The suits feature increased sizing options and adjustability to fit a much broader range of crew members, accommodating at least 90 percent of the U.S. male and female population. This is a significant improvement over past designs and supports NASA's goal of sending a more diverse group of astronauts to the Moon, including the first woman. The suit also incorporates advanced life support systems, including a regenerable carbon dioxide scrubbing system and robust cooling technology to manage the extreme physical exertion of an eight-hour moonwalk. Protection is paramount, with the outer layers designed to withstand the harsh lunar environment, from abrasive dust to temperature swings ranging from -208 to +250 degrees Fahrenheit.
Enabling Ambitious Exploration
The ultimate goal of this new technology is to empower astronauts to do more science. With greater mobility, astronauts can travel further from their lander, explore more complex terrain, and use specialized tools more effectively. Bending down to pick up a rock, a difficult task in an old suit, becomes a more manageable action, allowing for more thorough geological sampling. The helmet features an HD camera and advanced coatings to enhance the astronaut's view, while custom gloves improve dexterity. While some former astronauts have noted that the new suits are heavier and will still present physical challenges, they are a clear improvement over the Apollo-era technology. This step forward in suit design is a critical component of NASA's long-term vision for establishing a sustainable presence on the Moon and preparing for future human missions to Mars.
