The Core Itinerary
IRCTC offers several tour packages that combine these iconic Maharashtrian sites. While specifics can vary, a typical itinerary often starts from a major city like Mumbai, Chennai, or Hyderabad, or sometimes directly from Aurangabad (also known as Chhatrapati
Sambhajinagar). The journey generally covers Shirdi for Sai Baba darshan, Aurangabad as the base for visiting the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves, and often includes other significant temples like Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (located near Ellora) and Shani Shingnapur. The duration can range from a quick 2-night/3-day trip to a more comprehensive 5-night/6-day tour, depending on the origin city and the number of sites included.
Travel by Rail or Air
The primary mode of long-distance travel in these packages is typically by train. IRCTC offers different classes of travel to suit various budgets, commonly 'Standard' which corresponds to Sleeper (SL) class, and 'Comfort' which aligns with 3AC. Some packages may also offer 2AC. The train tickets are confirmed and part of the package cost, taking the hassle out of booking them yourself. For tours originating from more distant cities like Lucknow or Chennai, or for premium packages, flights may be the mode of transport to the nearest airport, which could be Shirdi or Aurangabad. It's essential to check the package details to see whether the travel is by train or air, and from which originating city.
Local Sightseeing Transport
Once you arrive at the destination city (like Aurangabad or Shirdi), all ground transportation for sightseeing is typically handled by IRCTC. The packages usually include travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, which could be a bus for larger groups or a smaller vehicle like a car for individual or small family bookings. This service covers all the transfers mentioned in the itinerary, such as from the railway station to the hotel, from the hotel to the various temples and caves, and finally, the drop-off back at the station or airport for your return journey. This coordinated transport is a major convenience, saving travellers the trouble of negotiating with local taxi services at each location.
Accommodation Standards
Accommodation is another key component arranged by IRCTC. The hotels provided are generally in the standard or comfort category, ensuring a clean and safe stay. The specific hotel is usually named in the package details or is of a similar standard. The booking is done on a single, twin, or triple sharing basis, which affects the overall package cost per person. Most packages operate on a Meal Plan (MAP), which means breakfast and dinner at the hotel are included in the price. Lunch is often excluded to allow for flexibility during day-long sightseeing excursions. For example, a full-day trip to the Ajanta Caves from Aurangabad means you will likely have lunch at a restaurant en route, which would be a personal expense.
What's Included and What's Not
Understanding the inclusions and exclusions is vital for budgeting. Typically, the package price covers your train or air tickets, hotel stays, breakfast and dinner, and all sightseeing transfers in an AC vehicle. Travel insurance is also often part of the deal. However, there are common exclusions. Travellers almost always have to pay for their own entrance fees to monuments like the Ajanta and Ellora caves. Other expenses not covered include lunch, any special darshan or pooja tickets, laundry, mineral water, and any personal shopping. Essentially, the package provides the complete logistical framework, while personal expenses and entry tickets remain your responsibility.
