Why Autumn is the Perfect Time to Visit
October and November mark a magical transition in the Andamans. As the monsoon recedes, it leaves behind a landscape that is incredibly lush and vibrant. The weather becomes pleasant and sunny, with significantly less rainfall than the preceding months,
creating ideal conditions for sightseeing and beach activities. This period is considered the start of the peak tourist season, but offers a sweet spot where you can enjoy the islands' beauty with fewer crowds than you'd find in December or January. The seas are generally calm, making island-hopping by ferry a smooth and reliable experience. Temperatures are comfortable, typically ranging from 22°C to 30°C, perfect for exploring the outdoors.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep): The Crown Jewel
No trip to the Andamans is complete without a visit to Havelock Island, officially known as Swaraj Dweep. It is home to some of the most famous beaches in Asia. Radhanagar Beach, often ranked among the world's best, is a must-see for its sprawling white sands and breathtaking sunsets. For adventure seekers, Elephant Beach is the go-to destination. Reachable by a short boat ride or a jungle trek, it’s a hotspot for water sports, especially snorkelling, thanks to its stunning and easily accessible coral reefs. Other beautiful spots like Vijaynagar Beach and Kalapathar Beach offer quieter alternatives for relaxation and watching the sunrise.
Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): A Tranquil Escape
If you're seeking a slower pace, Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) is your answer. Smaller and more serene than Havelock, this island is known for its relaxed vibe and picturesque countryside. It is sometimes called the 'vegetable bowl' of the Andamans because of its fertile land. The main attractions here are its three beautiful beaches: Bharatpur Beach, located near the jetty, is famous for its shallow waters and coral reefs, making it perfect for swimming and glass-bottom boat rides. Laxmanpur Beach is celebrated for its spectacular sunsets and white shell sand. A short walk from Laxmanpur leads to the Natural Bridge, a unique rock formation best visited during low tide. Sitapur Beach, on the eastern side, is the ideal spot to catch a serene sunrise.
Unmissable Underwater Adventures
The clear, calm seas of the autumn months provide excellent visibility, making it the best time for underwater exploration. The Andamans are a world-class destination for scuba diving and snorkelling. Both Havelock and Neil Island offer numerous dive sites suitable for beginners and certified divers alike. You don't need to be a swimmer to experience the marine world; many operators offer introductory dives. Sea walking is another popular activity, particularly at Elephant Beach, allowing you to walk on the seabed surrounded by colourful fish. For a more relaxed experience, kayaking through the mangrove creeks offers a peaceful way to witness the islands' rich biodiversity.
Planning Your Andaman Getaway
Getting to the Andamans is straightforward. The main entry point is Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, which has direct flights from major Indian cities like Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Bengaluru. From Port Blair, you can travel to other islands like Havelock and Neil via government or private ferries. It's highly recommended to book these ferry tickets in advance, especially as the tourist season picks up in November. For getting around on the islands themselves, renting a scooter is a popular and affordable option, particularly on the compact Neil Island. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are also readily available for sightseeing.
