The Great Job Market Paradox
Recent data reveals a fascinating and unsettling trend in the Indian job market. On one hand, a new survey from the professional networking platform Blind found that 66% of professionals in AI and machine learning roles expect layoffs in their teams within
the next six months. This highlights a pervasive fear gripping even those at the heart of the tech revolution. On the other hand, a comprehensive report from Nomura shows that AI is creating far more jobs than it is eliminating. Between 2022 and August 2026, India saw 83,100 AI-related hires compared to 31,921 job losses linked to the technology, a net positive gain. This means for every job lost, about 2.6 new ones were created. So, both the fear and the growth are real, stemming from the same disruptive force.
Why Both Trends Are Happening Now
This isn't a statistical error; it's the sign of a massive structural shift. AI is automating routine, repetitive tasks, which leads to layoffs or reduced hiring for certain roles. The Nomura report notes that many job cuts involved support teams being replaced by chatbots. At the same time, the creation, implementation, and management of these AI systems require new and specialised skills, driving a surge in hiring for roles that didn't exist a few years ago. The people losing jobs are rarely the same ones being hired for these new positions. This creates a two-tier labour market: demand is weakening for entry-level roles focused on rote tasks, while it's booming for experienced staff and those with specific AI expertise. One survey cited by Nomura found 55% of IT firms reported a decline in entry-level hiring.
The 'Must-Have' Skills for the AI Era
The key to navigating this shift is understanding what skills are now in high demand. It’s no longer just about being a “good developer.” Companies are seeking specialists. The most sought-after skills include AI and machine learning engineering, data science, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Specifically within AI, there's explosive growth for roles related to Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), with some specialist positions seeing a 170% increase in demand. Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and vector databases is frequently mentioned in job postings. Foundational skills like Python are still crucial, but the expectation has shifted from basic scripting to building functional data pipelines. Crucially, soft skills like critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence are also becoming more valuable as machines handle the technical grunt work.
