Understanding the New Lounge Rules
For years, complimentary lounge access was a key selling point for countless credit cards in India. Banks offered it generously to attract new customers. However, as air travel surged, so did lounge overcrowding and the costs for banks footing the bill.
In response, most major banks and card networks like Visa, Mastercard, and RuPay have introduced a significant change: spend-based criteria. This means your free lounge access is no longer guaranteed. To unlock it, you now typically need to spend a minimum amount—often between ₹5,000 and ₹75,000—on your card in the preceding quarter. If you don't meet this threshold, the perk remains locked. The era of the “free” lounge visit is fading, replaced by a system that rewards active, high-spending customers.
Strategy 1: Consolidate and Conquer
The most direct way to meet the new spending requirements is to stop spreading your purchases across multiple cards. Many young professionals have several credit cards, using each for different offers or reward points. In this new landscape, that strategy can backfire by diluting your total spend on any single card. Instead, pick one primary card—ideally the one with the most reasonable spending threshold and best travel benefits—and channel all your monthly expenses through it. From groceries and bill payments to online shopping and dining, consolidating your spending makes it significantly easier to hit that quarterly target and ensure your lounge access is waiting for you at the airport.
Strategy 2: Upgrade to a Travel-Focused Card
While entry-level cards are facing the tightest restrictions, the rules are often different for mid-tier and premium cards. If you travel frequently, it may be time to assess if your current card still meets your needs. Cards like the HDFC Regalia Gold, Axis Atlas, or SBI Card Elite are designed for travellers and often come with a more generous number of complimentary lounge visits. Some super-premium cards, such as the HDFC Infinia or American Express Platinum, still offer unlimited lounge access without spend-based conditions, though they come with high annual fees. Do the maths: if you pay for lounge access out-of-pocket frequently, the annual fee on a premium card might be a worthwhile investment for guaranteed comfort.
Strategy 3: Look Beyond Credit Cards
Credit cards aren't the only plastic in your wallet with lounge-worthy power. Don't overlook premium debit cards. Several banks offer complimentary lounge access on their higher-tier debit cards, sometimes with separate and more achievable spending criteria. For instance, some RuPay Select debit cards retain lounge access, provided you meet a minimum spend. It’s a commonly missed opportunity. Check the benefits associated with your savings or salary account’s debit card; you might already have the key to lounge access without even realizing it.
Strategy 4: Explore Alternative Access Routes
If managing card spending feels like too much of a hassle, there are other ways to get into a lounge. You can purchase a membership with a dedicated lounge access program like Priority Pass. A standard membership comes with an annual fee and a per-visit charge, which can be cost-effective for occasional travellers. For a single trip, you can often buy a one-time day pass directly at the lounge entrance, with prices typically ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹3,500. While not as cheap as a “free” visit via a credit card, it provides a guaranteed escape when you need it most, without any strings attached.
