The announcement was made to foster closer people-to-people connections and business exchanges between the two nations. This makes visiting the historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva much more accessible for many, but only if they meet the specific criteria.
Who is Eligible for Visa-Free Entry?
The key to this new policy lies in your existing travel documents. Indian citizens who hold a valid, multiple-entry visa for specific countries are permitted to enter Uzbekistan visa-free. According to the Embassy of India in Tashkent, this applies to those with multiple-entry business or tourist visas issued by the United States, the United Kingdom, Schengen Area member states, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, or the Republic of Korea. If you hold one of these valid visas, you can take advantage of the 30-day visa-free stay. If you do not possess one of these specific visas, you are not eligible under this particular scheme and will need to secure a visa through other means.
The Essential Conditions to Remember
Holding an eligible visa is the first step, but there is another mandatory condition. All travellers using this facility must also hold a confirmed onward or return air ticket. This ticket must show your planned departure from Uzbekistan within the 30-day limit, either back to your country of origin or to a third country. Failure to produce this ticket upon arrival could result in being denied entry, even if you have a qualifying visa from one of the listed nations. It is crucial to have your entire travel itinerary, including your exit flight, booked and confirmed before you travel.
What If You Don't Qualify?
If you are an Indian citizen who does not hold a valid multiple-entry visa from one of the specified countries, do not worry—you can still visit Uzbekistan. You will simply need to apply for a visa through the standard channels. The most convenient option for most tourists is the electronic visa, or e-Visa. This can be applied for online through the official government portal at least three working days before your planned departure. The process involves filling out an application, uploading a photo and a scan of your passport, and paying a fee online. Once approved, the e-Visa is sent to your email, which you must print and carry with you.
Other Visa Options for Indians
Besides the conditional visa-free stay and the standard e-Visa, there are other provisions to be aware of. Indian citizens can make use of a five-day visa-free transit regime at Uzbekistan's international airports. To be eligible for this, you must have an onward ticket to a third country within those five days, and your airline must provide advance notification to the Uzbek border authorities. Additionally, foreign citizens under the age of 16 can enter Uzbekistan visa-free for up to 90 days, provided they are accompanied by their legal guardians and hold a valid passport. For any stay longer than three days, all visitors are required to register with the local authorities, a process that is typically handled automatically by hotels.
