The Big Bookings: Flights and Hotels
For large, pre-trip purchases like airline tickets and hotel reservations, the credit card is your best friend. The primary advantage is the host of travel-centric benefits that come bundled with them. Many travel credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance,
including coverage for lost luggage, flight delays, and even medical emergencies. Furthermore, booking with a credit card provides robust fraud protection and dispute resolution mechanisms. If an airline cancels a flight or a hotel overbooks, initiating a chargeback via your credit card company is a powerful recourse that UPI does not offer. Add to this the benefit of earning reward points, air miles, and potential access to airport lounges, and the credit card emerges as the clear winner for these high-value transactions.
On-the-Ground: UPI’s Expanding Turf
Once you've landed, your payment strategy needs to adapt. In a growing number of countries, India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is making significant inroads. As of 2026, nations like the UAE, Singapore, France, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, and Greece have enabled UPI payments for Indian travellers at participating merchants. This allows you to scan a QR code and pay directly from your Indian bank account, just like you do at home. To use this, you must first activate international payments in your UPI app before you travel. This is ideal for paying at cafes, souvenir shops, and restaurants in tourist-heavy areas where the infrastructure is supported.
The Cost Factor: Fees and Charges
This is where the comparison gets nuanced. Standard credit cards are notorious for high foreign currency transaction (forex) markup fees, typically ranging from 2% to 4% of the transaction amount, plus GST. Some premium credit cards offer a zero or low forex markup, but these often come with high annual fees. International UPI transactions, while convenient, are not entirely free either. Though the UPI app itself doesn't charge a fee, your bank will levy a currency conversion markup, often between 1.5% and 3.5%, and sometimes a small flat fee. However, UPI often proves to be slightly cheaper than a standard credit card for smaller transactions. A major trap with credit cards is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), where you're offered to pay in Indian Rupees. Always decline this and choose to pay in the local currency to avoid inflated exchange rates set by the merchant's bank.
Everyday Spending: Cafes and Cabs
For small, daily expenses, the best option depends on your destination. In a country with widespread UPI acceptance like Singapore or the UAE, using your UPI app for a coffee or a short taxi ride is seamless and cost-effective. It bypasses the need to meet a minimum spend that some merchants require for card payments. However, in countries where UPI is not yet available or its acceptance is sparse, a credit card remains the default. Tapping your contactless card is quick and efficient. Carrying a small amount of local cash is also wise for situations where digital payments aren't an option at all.
Safety, Security, and Emergencies
When it comes to security, both systems have strengths. UPI is considered secure as it requires a PIN for every transaction and doesn't expose your card details, reducing the risk of skimming. However, QR code scams, where fake codes redirect payments to fraudsters, are a potential risk. Credit cards offer superior protection against fraud. If your card is lost or stolen, you can block it immediately, and liability for fraudulent transactions is often limited. This protection, combined with the higher transaction limits, makes a credit card indispensable for emergencies, such as unexpected medical bills or last-minute flight changes.
Rewards and Perks: The Credit Card Edge
UPI is a simple payment system; it does not offer a rewards ecosystem. Credit cards, on the other hand, are built around incentives. Every travel-related swipe earns you points or miles that can be redeemed for future flights, hotel stays, or upgrades. Premium cards further enhance the travel experience with complimentary access to airport lounges worldwide, concierge services, and exclusive dining or hotel offers. If maximising value and comfort is part of your travel plan, the benefits offered by a good travel credit card are unmatched by any other payment method.
