The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is conducting a series of 'Independent Drive Tests' (IDTs) along major travel arteries across the country, including highways and railway lines. These aren't just random checks. Appointed agencies use vehicles
equipped with advanced software and multiple handsets running SIM cards from all major operators—including Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and BSNL. They systematically measure key performance indicators (KPIs) that directly impact your experience, such as network coverage, call drop rates, call connection success, and, crucially, 4G and 5G data speeds. The goal is to create a transparent, real-world snapshot of mobile service quality where connectivity matters most: when we are on the move.
The Push for Seamless On-the-Go Connectivity
This increased focus on travel corridors isn't happening in a vacuum. It’s a direct response to rising consumer complaints and the growing demand for uninterrupted digital access outside of static home or office environments. As data consumption soars and services like video streaming and online navigation become essential travel companions, patchy network performance on a busy expressway is no longer a minor inconvenience but a significant service failure. These public reports serve a dual purpose: they inform consumers and put pressure on telecom service providers (TSPs) to identify and rectify weaknesses in their networks. TRAI shares the findings directly with the operators, urging them to take necessary action to improve service quality where they fall short.
The Operator Showdown: Highways and Rail Routes
Recent reports from corridors in states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan paint a detailed picture of the competitive landscape. On routes like the Indore-Neemuch and Bilaspur-Ambikapur highways, Jio has consistently demonstrated a significant lead in 5G download speeds, often clocking speeds multiple times faster than its competitors. For instance, on the Indore-Neemuch Highway, Jio’s 5G download speed was recorded at 216.50 Mbps, compared to Airtel’s 86.90 Mbps. However, when it comes to voice calls, the competition is tighter, with Airtel and Vi often showing excellent call connection rates with nearly zero drops in some tested areas. BSNL, unfortunately, has been found to lag considerably across most tested corridors, both in data speeds and voice call reliability, recording the highest instances of dropped calls and poor signal strength on routes like the Jodhpur-Ahmedabad rail line.
Location Is Everything: Performance Varies Widely
A key takeaway from these assessments is that no single operator is the best everywhere. Performance is highly localised. A provider that offers stellar speeds in one city or on one highway might struggle on another. For example, drive tests on the Delhi Metro routes found poor network coverage and signal strength issues for all operators, including leaders like Jio and Airtel, highlighting the unique challenges of providing connectivity in underground and elevated transit systems. In contrast, tests in Bhopal city showed Jio with dominant data speeds, while voice call quality was strong across Jio, Airtel, and Vi, with BSNL trailing. This location-specific data is empowering for consumers, allowing them to potentially choose an operator based on their daily commute or frequent travel routes rather than just on city-wide averages.
What This Means for You and the Telcos
For consumers, these publicly available reports from TRAI are a powerful tool for making informed decisions. Instead of relying on advertising claims, you can see objective data on how networks perform on the specific routes you travel. For the telecom operators, this is a new public battleground. The detailed, location-specific nature of the reports means they can no longer hide behind broad network quality claims. Consistently poor performance on a high-traffic highway or railway line is now officially documented and made public.
