A Path Paved with Gold
Dubai's Gold District has announced plans to construct what it calls the world's first and longest pedestrian walkway made of 24-carat gold, with an ambitious goal to open it before the end of 2026. According to Rashid Al Harmoudi, a senior director at the Dubai Gold District,
the project is scheduled to be completed within the next two months. It promises a unique experience, allowing residents and tourists to literally walk along a golden path. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Dubai's reputation as a top tourist destination and a global centre for the gold trade. The announcement was made in late October 2026, creating a buzz around what could be the city's most extravagant attraction yet. While the exact length, cost, and quantity of gold remain under wraps, the ambition is clear: to create an unforgettable landmark.
Reimagining a Historic Hub
The project is located within the Dubai Gold District in Deira, an area that is a modern extension of the city's famed, historic Gold Souk. The original souk is a cornerstone of Dubai's trading legacy, a traditional market that has drawn visitors for decades. In recent years, the area has undergone significant redevelopment through the Deira Enrichment Project, which aims to blend its cultural charm with modern amenities. The Gold Souk Extension, which officially opened in 2022, added hundreds of new retail shops, offices, residences, and upgraded infrastructure like shaded walkways and better parking. The golden walkway is the next step in this evolution, designed to attract a new wave of visitors and reinforce the area's identity as the 'City of Gold'.
More Than Just an Attraction
Beyond the sheer novelty, the golden walkway serves a significant business purpose. It's a strategic move to drive foot traffic and commercial activity in the Gold District. Officials have noted a recent uptick in business, with a 20% increase in wholesale gold trading offices and a 15% rise in new jewellery and luxury watch shops since the start of 2026. The walkway is intended to build on this momentum. By creating a must-see spectacle, the district hopes to attract more visitors, who will then shop at the more than 1,000 retailers in the area. It also complements plans for a major new gold and jewellery exhibition, which aims to be the largest in the Middle East.
A Symbol of Golden Ambition
This project fits perfectly within Dubai's brand of building bigger, better, and more luxurious attractions than anywhere else in the world. From the world's tallest building to man-made islands, the city has long used ambitious engineering and design to capture global attention. The timing of the announcement coincided with Dubai celebrating two other gold-related Guinness World Records: for the world's heaviest and largest pair of traditional 'jhumka' earrings. The walkway is another statement piece, solidifying the emirate's deep connection to the precious metal. The UAE is already the world's second-largest physical gold trading destination, and this project is a very public declaration of its intent to remain at the centre of the global jewellery industry.
