Some educators suggest a simple test: Would you ask a human teacher to do this task for you? You would ask a teacher to help brainstorm an essay, but not to write it for you. The goal is to use AI as a collaborator that encourages active engagement, not a crutch that promotes passive consumption.
Question 2: Can I Trust the Information?
AI models, including those in study modes, are trained on vast datasets from the internet. This means they can be incredibly knowledgeable, but also prone to errors, biases, and what experts call 'hallucinations'—making things up entirely. Constant use of AI to answer questions can erode your ability to reason, analyse, and form independent judgments. Some research has found that students who lean too heavily on AI demonstrate poorer reasoning skills compared to those using traditional search methods. To counter this, actively choose to use AI for tasks that augment your thinking, not replace it. For example, use it to generate practice questions to test your knowledge or to explain a concept in a different way after you've already tried to understand it yourself.
Question 4: Does It Deepen Understanding or Just Surface-Level Facts?
True learning is about understanding the 'why' and 'how', not just memorising the 'what'. Specialised study modes from platforms like OpenAI are being designed to guide students with questions rather than just handing over answers. The intent is to foster genuine understanding by breaking down complex topics and encouraging interaction. However, the responsibility still lies with you, the user. You must ask if the tool is helping you connect abstract concepts to real-world examples. Does it push you to think critically about the material, or does it just provide simplified summaries? For complex subjects that require nuance and interpretation, an AI might provide a technically correct but shallow overview. Always push the tool—and yourself—to go deeper.

Finally, there is a practical and ethical question to ask: What are the rules for using AI in my course? Policies on AI use can vary dramatically between institutions and even between different instructors. Using an AI tool in a way that is not permitted can lead to serious academic consequences. Before you integrate any AI study assistant into your workflow, you must understand the specific guidelines for your assignments. When in doubt, always ask your instructor for clarification. Using these tools transparently and ethically is not just about avoiding trouble; it’s about maintaining academic integrity and ensuring you are getting the education you are there for.
