From Itinerary-Fatigue to Intentional Rest
For decades, the typical Indian holiday was a whirlwind of activity—a mad dash to tick off as many tourist spots as possible in a limited time. But a significant shift is underway, particularly among Millennials and Gen Z. The post-pandemic world, coupled
with rising burnout from digital overload and demanding work lives, has created a deep craving for genuine rest. Instead of collecting photos, young travelers are now seeking to collect moments of peace. This has given rise to the popularity of slow travel, where the goal isn’t to see more, but to experience a single place more deeply.
The Rise of the Staycation and Workation
The travel dictionary for young Indians now prominently features terms like 'staycation' and 'workation'. Staycations—short, relaxing breaks in or near one's home city—have become a popular way to de-stress without the hassle of extensive planning. Destinations a few hours' drive from major cities are seeing a boom. At the same time, the normalization of remote work has fueled the 'workation' trend. Many are swapping their city apartments for month-long stays in beach houses in Goa or quiet homestays in the Himalayas, blending productivity with peace. Reports suggest that a significant percentage of Indian Gen Z travelers plan to combine work and leisure, extending work trips from a few days to a week or more.
Wellness Takes Center Stage
This new travel mindset is deeply connected to wellness. Once a niche segment, wellness tourism in India has become a mainstream expectation. Young travelers are actively seeking out holidays that focus on health, relaxation, and mental well-being. This includes everything from yoga retreats and meditation programs in Rishikesh to Ayurvedic therapies in Kerala. The demand is not just for luxury spas; it extends to simpler experiences like digital detoxes, nature immersion, and stays in places that offer clean air and quiet routines. This shift reflects a broader consumer preference for experiences that help them reset and reconnect.
Authenticity Over Everything
Beyond just rest, the new generation of travelers is on a quest for authenticity. Many now prefer unique homestays and boutique villas over conventional hotels because they offer a more personal and comfortable feel. Surveys indicate that a vast majority of Gen Z travelers want their trips to feel unique and are actively avoiding viral hotspots in favor of undiscovered places. This search for authenticity also extends to experiences, with a focus on local food, cultural immersion, and connecting with the community. In fact, some studies show that a majority of young travelers have chosen a destination specifically because of a unique stay they discovered, making accommodation a central part of the travel experience itself.
