Acceptance and Reach
While Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become nearly universal in cities and towns, its reliability can dwindle in remote tourist spots with patchy internet. A survey noted that 85% of tourists find it inconvenient to locate ATMs that accept all cards
in such areas. While credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger establishments, cash remains king for small vendors, local transport, and roadside eateries. Relying on a single payment method is risky. A balanced approach works best: use credit cards for big-ticket bookings, UPI for city-based transactions, and always carry a sensible amount of cash, especially smaller denomination notes, for areas where digital payments might fail.
Security and Fraud Protection
A lost wallet or a compromised phone can derail a holiday. This is where different payment methods offer varying levels of security. Credit cards often provide the strongest protection, with features like zero-liability policies for fraudulent transactions and the ability to remotely block the card. Digital wallets and UPI are secured by PINs, but losing your phone can be a major issue. Carrying large amounts of cash is the riskiest proposition due to the potential for theft or loss. A smart strategy is to divide your funds across different methods and keep them in separate places. Consider using a money belt or an anti-theft bag for added security when carrying cash and cards.
Hidden Fees and Charges
The price you see might not be the price you pay, especially with certain cards. Many standard credit and debit cards levy foreign exchange (forex) markup fees of 2-3.5% on international transactions. Even for domestic trips, some cards might have hidden charges or less favourable reward conversion rates. On the other hand, UPI transactions are generally free of such charges, making them ideal for small, everyday payments. Before you travel, review your card’s terms and conditions. Look for travel-specific cards that offer low or zero forex markup. Being aware of these fees can save you a significant amount, preventing unpleasant surprises on your post-trip statement.
Valuable Travel Perks
Premium travel credit cards offer a suite of benefits that go far beyond simple cashback or reward points. One of the most sought-after perks is complimentary access to airport lounges, a welcome respite during long layovers or delays. Many cards also come with bundled travel insurance, which can cover trip cancellations, lost baggage, or even medical emergencies. Other benefits may include concierge services, discounts on hotel and flight bookings, and complimentary golf rounds. While these cards often come with an annual fee, the value derived from their perks can often outweigh the cost for frequent travellers.
Budgeting and Tracking Expenses
Festive trips can easily lead to overspending. The right payment method can help you stay on track. Debit cards and UPI are excellent for budget-conscious travellers as they draw directly from your bank account, preventing you from spending more than you have. Credit cards, while offering a credit line, can encourage impulse purchases if not managed with discipline. However, their detailed monthly statements provide a clear record of your expenses, making it easier to track where your money went. Many banking apps now offer spending analysis tools that categorise your transactions, giving you a clear overview of your holiday expenditure regardless of the payment method.
