Diwali is a festival of lights, joy, and togetherness, often involving long hours of celebration. While you want your festive look to last, the last thing you need is eye makeup causing irritation, redness, or discomfort. Here’s how to shine bright without
worry.
The Foundation of Flawless Wear
Before a single brush touches your skin, preparation is key. Always begin with a thoroughly cleansed face and clean hands to minimise the transfer of bacteria to your eye area. If you've bought new products for the festive season, it's wise to perform a patch test on your skin at least 24 hours beforehand to rule out any allergic reactions. This is also the perfect time to declutter your makeup bag. Check the expiry dates on all your products, especially mascara and liquid eyeliners. Most products have a 'Period After Opening' (PAO) symbol (an open jar with a number like 6M or 12M) that tells you how many months it's good for after being opened. Using expired makeup is a leading cause of eye infections.
Smart Application for Sensitive Eyes
How you apply your makeup is just as important as the products you use. While sharing sweets during Diwali is a cherished tradition, sharing eye makeup should be strictly avoided. Products like kajal, eyeliner, and mascara wands can easily transfer bacteria, leading to infections like conjunctivitis. Always sharpen your eye and lip pencils before each use; this simple act removes the outer layer that may have been exposed to bacteria. When it comes to kajal and eyeliner, avoid applying it directly on your waterline—the inner rim of your eyelid. This area contains glands that are crucial for eye health, and blocking them can lead to dryness and irritation. Instead, apply your liner just outside the lash line for a defined look that is much safer. If you wear contact lenses, insert them before you start your makeup and remove them before you begin the cleanup process.
Go for Glamour, Carefully
Glittery eyes are a popular choice for Diwali, but they come with their own set of rules. Opt for cosmetic-grade glitter specifically designed for use around the eyes. Craft glitter is often made of larger, sharper particles that can cause serious corneal abrasions if they fall into your eye. To minimise fallout, use a glitter primer or a sticky base to help the particles adhere securely to your lids. During the long hours of festivities, with potential exposure to smoke from diyas and crackers, your eyes are already under stress. Resist the urge to rub them, no matter how tired you feel. This can push makeup particles and environmental pollutants into your eye, causing immediate irritation. If your eyes feel dry or itchy, a few drops of preservative-free lubricating eye drops can provide safe relief.
The All-Important Removal Ritual
No matter how late it is or how tired you are after a night of celebrations, never go to bed with your eye makeup on. Sleeping in makeup is one of the biggest culprits behind eye infections, styes, and chronic irritation. To remove stubborn, long-wearing, and waterproof products, you need more than just soap and water. Invest in a quality dual-phase or oil-based eye makeup remover. Soak a cotton pad with the solution, press it gently against your closed eyelid for about 20–30 seconds to allow it to dissolve the makeup, and then wipe downwards softly. Avoid aggressive rubbing or pulling at the delicate skin around your eyes. Make sure every last trace of mascara and eyeliner is gone before you finally wash your face and head to bed.
